Chapter 5 - The Final Reckoning

Three months passed.

The collapse of Mercer Holdings and Apex Global was the biggest corporate scandal the city had seen in fifty years. Julian Vance, Celeste Mercer, and Richard Sterling were all convicted on federal racketeering and corruption charges, facing decades behind bars.

Vale Construction had not only recovered but flourished. With the evidence I provided, we reclaimed all stolen assets and acquired the legitimate assets of Mercer Holdings, expanding our firm into a regional powerhouse.

Yet, I couldn't sleep.

Nolan Mercer had vanished into thin air the night of the pier raid. He had slipped through an unmapped drainage pipe behind Pier 42 and escaped into the night. He was a fugitive on Interpol's Red Notice list, but as the days turned into months, the world seemed to move on.

I refused to move on. I lived with a private security team, checked my car every morning, and constantly scanned every room I entered.

It was a crisp autumn evening. I was working late in my new office on the top floor of the Vale Tower. The rest of the floor was empty, the quiet ambient hum of the city eighty stories below providing a soothing background noise.

I closed my laptop, rubbed my tired eyes, and stood up to grab my coat.

The lights suddenly went out.

The entire floor plunged into pitch blackness. Emergency red backup lights flickered on a moment later, casting long, eerie shadows across the glass walls.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I reached into my desk drawer and gripped the small stun gun I carried everywhere.

Click.

The distinct sound of an electronic door lock engaging sounded from the main lobby.

I backed up against the wall, keeping my breath shallow. Footsteps slowly echoed down the carpeted hallway. Soft, dragging, uneven footsteps.

"You took everything from me, Elena," a hollow, raspy voice called out from the darkness.

Nolan stepped into the red light of my office doorway.

He looked unrecognizable. His hair was long and matted, his clothes filthy and oversized. He was thin, hollow-cheeked, and his eyes burned with an unhinged, dangerous mania. In his right hand, he held a heavy steel crowbar.

"Nolan," I said, keeping my voice steady, though every instinct in my body screamed at me to run. "There is nowhere left for you to go. The building security knows you're here."

"Security is asleep," Nolan sneered, taking a slow step toward me. "I spent two weeks learning their shift rotations. I slipped in through the basement loading dock. Just like the old days, right, Elena? You always thought you were smarter than me."

"I am smarter than you," I said, slowly sliding my hand behind my back toward the emergency panic button installed under the edge of my desk. "That's why you're a hunted criminal and I'm running this company."

Nolan let out a sharp, hysterical laugh and raised the crowbar, lunging forward with terrifying speed. "Shut up!"

I dodged to the left just as the heavy steel bar shattered the glass desktop behind me. Shards of glass rained onto the carpet.

I whipped around and slammed the stun gun against his neck, pulling the trigger. High-voltage electricity crackled through his body. Nolan screamed, staggering back, but his sheer rage and adrenaline kept him on his feet. He backhanded me with full force.

The impact sent me sprawling across the floor. My lip split open, the taste of copper filling my mouth—a familiar, horrible pain.

Nolan stood over me, panting heavily, raising the crowbar above his head with both hands. "I should have killed you the day I saw you downloading those files," he growled. "Nobody leaves me, Elena. Nobody."

I looked up at him, wiping the blood from my mouth. I didn't feel fear anymore. I felt only a cold, burning absolute clarity.

"You're right," I whispered. "Nobody leaves you."

I kicked out with both feet, striking him hard in his left knee—the exact spot where my father had twisted his leg three months ago down the wedding aisle.

Nolan’s knee buckled with a sickening snap. He let out a blood-curdling scream and collapsed onto his back, dropping the crowbar.

Before he could recover, I scrambled up, grabbed the heavy marble statue from the side table, and brought it down hard onto his chest, pinning him to the floor. I placed my foot firmly on his neck, pressing down just enough to restrict his breathing.

"This is the final lesson, Nolan," I said, leaning down, my eyes burning into his terrified face. "In my family... we hit back."

The reinforced glass doors burst open. My father, accompanied by four armed security guards and uniformed police officers, rushed into the office.

When Dad saw Nolan pinned beneath me, he stopped. He looked at the blood on my lip, then at Nolan cowering beneath my boot.

Dad slowly lowered his hands, a proud, tearful smile breaking across his face.

"Stand down, officers," Dad said quietly to the police. "My daughter has everything under control."
