Chapter 3 - The Docks at Midnight

The rain poured heavily over the industrial district, turning the asphalt into a dark mirror reflecting the dim amber streetlights.
I sat in the passenger seat of a black SUV parked two blocks from Pier 42. Beside me was Marcus, a former special forces officer who had managed my father's security detail for over a decade. In the backseat, Dad monitored three laptop screens receiving live feeds from microscopic cameras Marcus’s team had planted near the perimeter hours earlier.
"Nolan’s location just updated," Dad reported, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "His ankle monitor places him inside the main warehouse at Pier 42. Celeste is with him."
"And Vance?" I asked, checking the battery level on my tablet.
"Vance’s private security detail arrived twenty minutes ago. They’ve shut down the security cameras around the perimeter."
"Which means they’re moving the offshore hard servers tonight," I said, pulled my rain hood over my head. "Marcus, are we tied into their local network?"
"We are," Marcus replied, handing me a small receiver device. "Once you get within fifty feet of their primary server rack inside the office container, this receiver will automatically clone their local drives via direct wireless relay. But Elena... you shouldn't be going in there. It’s too dangerous."
"Vance's network uses biometrics tied to the Mercer accounts," I replied smoothly. "Nolan used my thumbprint as a secondary authorization key three months ago when he forced me to sign those joint development forms. I’m the only one who can bypass the vault protocol without triggering a hard wipe."
Dad gripped my shoulder. "Elena, please. Be careful."
"I spent six months letting Nolan make me feel weak, Dad," I said, looking him in the eye. "I’m done being the victim."
Sliding out of the SUV into the pouring rain, I followed Marcus through a gap in the chain-link fence. We moved silently through the rows of towering shipping containers. The air smelled of salt water, diesel exhaust, and rust.
Up ahead, the central warehouse was illuminated by floodlights. Heavy iron doors were cracked open, exposing the brightly lit interior.
We slipped through a side entrance, staying low behind a stack of wooden crates.
Inside, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Standing near a mobile server command unit was Nolan, looking disheveled, his expensive suit rumpled, his eyes bloodshot with panic. Beside him stood Celeste, her face pale, frantically packing documents into a heavy leather briefcase.
Facing them was a man in an tailored trench coat—Julian Vance.
"You ruined everything, you stupid boy!" Vance snapped, his voice echoing off the high steel rafters. "You brought the FBI to my doorstep because you couldn't keep your hands off your fiancee!"
"It wasn't my fault!" Nolan yelled back, his voice cracking with desperation. "She tricked me! She’s been spying on me for months!"
"She is a forensic accountant, you idiot!" Vance yelled, stepping into Nolan's space. "You brought a wolf into your bed and mistook her for a sheep! Now the feds are auditing Apex Global. If those servers aren't wiped and shipped to Dubai by 2:00 AM, we are all going to federal prison for the rest of our lives!"
"Just wipe them now!" Celeste pleaded, her voice shaking. "We have the cash! Let us take the boat out tonight!"
"I can't wipe them without the secondary biological override key," Vance spat, turning toward the computer bank. "Nolan set the encryption protocols under his and Elena's signatures. If I force-wipe it, the system automatically sends an unencrypted copy of the entire ledger directly to the Department of Justice."
Behind the crates, I looked down at my tablet. The wireless receiver in my pocket vibrated softly.
Connection established. Signal strength: 85%.
I brought up the biometrics screen on my tablet and placed my thumb against the glass scanner.
Across the warehouse, the server rack suddenly beeped loudly. Green lights began to flash rapidly across the black metal towers.
Vance froze. Nolan whipped his head around.
"What is that?!" Vance shouted. "Who is accessing the system?!"
The lead technician at the console stared at his monitor in horror. "Sir! The system isn't wiping! It’s... it’s downloading! Someone is executing an external biological override right now!"

Nolan’s head snapped toward the shadowy rows of crates where Marcus and I were hiding. His face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated madness.
"She’s here," Nolan whispered. Then he screamed at the top of his lungs, "ELENA!"
