Chapter 4 - The Traitor in the Light

"Find her!" Vance roared, pulling a sleek black handgun from inside his coat. "Kill her and take her phone!"
Instant chaos erupted. Vance's armed guards fanned out, pulling suppressed weapons from their holsters.
Marcus didn't hesitate. He pulled two smoke grenades from his vest, popped the pins, and hurled them into the center of the warehouse. Thick, white smoke billowed out instantly, blinding the guards and triggering the warehouse fire alarms. Overhead sprinklers burst to life, raining cold water down on the scene.
"Go! Elena, move now!" Marcus yelled, drawing his weapon and firing two warning shots into the rafters to create further confusion.
I turned and sprinted through the maze of shipping containers, my tablet clamped tightly under my arm as the download progress bar slowly ticked upward: 68%... 74%... 81%...
"You can't run from me, Elena!" Nolan's voice screamed through the mist and rain.
I rounded a corner near the back exit, but a figure stepped out from the shadows, blocking my path.
I stopped dead in my tracks.
It wasn't Nolan. It wasn't one of Vance's guards.
It was Richard Sterling—my father’s senior Vice President and closest friend for over twenty years. He was holding an encrypted flash drive and a silent weapon pointed directly at my chest.
"Uncle Richard?" I gasped, my chest heaving. "What... what are you doing here?"
Richard looked at me with a sad, weary expression, but his gun hand didn't shake. "I’m sorry, Elena. I truly am. You were always like a daughter to me."
"You’re the mole," I realized, the horrifying truth clicking into place. "The voice on the phone... the suspicious transfers from our joint development account... it wasn't just Nolan. You were feeding him information from inside Vale Construction!"
"Your father is a good man, Elena, but he has no vision!" Richard said bitterly, the rainwater dripping off his nose. "He refused to expand into international logistics. Mercer Holdings offered me thirty percent equity in Apex Global if I helped them absorb Vale Construction through your marriage!"
"You sold us out," I said, tears burning my eyes despite the freezing rain. "You let Nolan hurt me! You knew what he was doing to me for six months!"
"I didn't know he was hitting you!" Richard yelled back, his composure breaking slightly. "I thought he was just controlling! But once the machine started rolling, I couldn't stop it! Give me the tablet, Elena. If Vance gets those drives, he’ll kill all of us. If you give them to me, I can make sure your father survives this!"
Download Complete: 100%.
My tablet chimed quietly in the dark.
"I don't need your protection, Richard," I said softly.
Before Richard could react, a blinding spotlight hit him square in the face.
"Drop your weapon! Police! Hands where we can see them!"
Sirens blared from every direction as federal vehicles smashed through the perimeter gates of Pier 42. Dozens of heavily armed FBI SWAT agents swarmed the area, their crimson laser sights cutting through the smoke and rain.
Richard froze, dropping his gun onto the wet concrete as agents tackled him to the ground.
I turned around to see my father running toward me through the rain, flanked by federal agents. He pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly as I let out a long, shuddering breath.
"It's over, baby," Dad whispered, his hands trembling against my back. "It's finally over."

Behind us, Vance and Celeste were dragged out in heavy restraints. But as I scanned the chaotic scene, my heart dropped into my stomach.
Nolan was nowhere to be found.
