Chapter 4 - The Night of the Wolves

"Branco!" Rain roared into his secure radio, pulling a heavy black handgun from a hidden compartment beneath his desk.

The radio crackled with static and the sound of screams. "Boss! It’s a ambush! Mikhail brought in mercenary crews from the Russian syndicate! They’ve breached the southern gate! They’re killing anyone loyal to you! You need to—" The transmission ended in a deafening explosion.

Marisol screamed, instantly dropping to the floor and covering Teddy with her own body. Teddy couldn't hear the gunfire, but she could feel the violent vibrations in the floorboards. She clutched her mother, her small face pale with terror.

"Marisol! Look at me!" Rain shouted over the roar of the alarms. He strode over, grabbing her by the shoulder and pulling both her and Teddy to their feet. "There is a secure panic room behind the wine cellar in the basement. You take Teddy and you run there. Do not stop for anyone. Do you understand me?"

"What about you?" Marisol cried, gripping his shirt. "You're not fully healed yet! They will kill you!"

"They can try," Rain growled, a feral, terrifying smile appearing on his face. "This is my house. These are my docks. I am the Volkov Don. Now go!"

He pushed her toward the private servant's staircase behind the bookshelf. Marisol scooped Teddy into her arms and ran down the dark, twisting stone steps, the echoes of gunfire echoing through the walls.

The mansion had become a slaughterhouse. As Marisol reached the ground floor corridor, she saw bodies of loyal guards slumped against the marble statues. She hid in the shadows of the dining room, holding her hand over Teddy's mouth to keep her quiet.

Through the crack of the door, she saw Mikhail walking down the hallway, flanked by four heavily armed mercenaries. He held a gold-plated pistol, his face twisted in an expression of megalomaniacal triumph.

"Find my cousin!" Mikhail ordered his men. "Bring me his head. And find that maid and her brat. I want no loose ends left to talk to the Commission."

Marisol’s heart hammered against her ribs. The path to the basement was blocked. She had to find another way out, or they would be trapped like rats. She looked at Teddy, whose eyes were wide, tears streaming down her face. Teddy signed with shaking fingers: Daddy?

She had started calling Rain "Daddy" in her head, associating his heartbeat with safety.

"We have to save him, Teddy," Marisol whispered, her maternal instinct morphing into a fierce, desperate courage. She remembered the logistics keys she had kept from her old job—keys that opened the old underground drainage tunnels leading straight to the private docks where Rain’s speedboats were kept.

If she could reach the docks, she could give Rain an escape route.
