Chapter 2 - The Alliance of the Broken

The revelation hung in the air like toxic smoke. Marisol looked from the file to Rain’s pale face, then down at Teddy, who had fallen asleep against the edge of the mattress, her small hand still resting near Rain's knee.

"Why are you telling me this?" Marisol asked, tears spilling over her lashes. "I'm just a maid. I have no power. If the people who killed Leo find out I know..."

"They won't find out," Rain interrupted, his voice fiercely protective. "Because as of this moment, you are no longer a maid. You are my private caretaker. No one enters this room, no one prepares my food, and no one touches my medicine except you. You want justice for your husband. I want to survive to butcher the rats who betrayed me. We need each other, Marisol."

Before Marisol could answer, a sharp knock rattled the door.

Rain instantly closed the folder and slid it back beneath his pillow. His entire demeanor transformed from an ally into a ruthless tyrant in the span of a single breath. "Enter," he barked.

The door swung open to reveal Dr. Mikhail Volkov, Rain’s first cousin and the family's chief medical officer. Mikhail was a sharp-featured man with perfectly tailored suits and a smile that never quite reached his eyes. Behind him stood Branco, his arms crossed over his chest.

"Rain," Mikhail said, walking in with a silver briefcase. "Branco told me there was a security breach. A maid's child wandering into the inner sanctum? Really, we must maintain protocols, especially now that your cardiac enzymes are fluctuating so dangerously."

Mikhail glanced at Marisol with naked contempt, then noticed the sleeping Teddy. "Get this garbage out of here immediately. And call human resources to have this woman processed and thrown out."

"No," Rain said smoothly, his voice cutting through the room like a razor. "The child stays. And Marisol stays."

Mikhail froze, his hand stopping halfway to his briefcase. "Excuse me? Rain, your condition is critical. You need absolute quiet. You cannot have staff members cluttering your deathbed."

"It is not my deathbed, cousin," Rain replied, a dangerous glint in his gray eyes. "Marisol’s daughter has a calming effect on my heart rate. Look at the monitor. The rhythm is more stable than it has been in weeks. From now on, Marisol is my primary nurse. She will handle all my intake."

Mikhail’s eyes narrowed into slits. He looked at Marisol, his gaze lingering a second too long on her shaking hands. "She is a cleaning lady, Rain. She doesn't have the medical training to handle your complex dosage. If she makes a mistake, it could be fatal."

"Then I will ensure she doesn't make a mistake," Rain said. "Branco, escort Dr. Mikhail out. I need to rest."

As Mikhail turned to leave, he passed Marisol. In a voice so quiet only she could hear, he whispered, "You're playing with fire, little girl. Make sure you don't burn along with your brat."

The moment the door shut, Marisol collapsed into a chair. She looked at Rain, who was staring at the ceiling, his breathing shallow. The war had officially begun, and she had just been drafted into the front lines of a mafia blood feud.
