Chapter 3 - The Crimson Poison

Over the next two weeks, the east wing became a fortress within a fortress. Under Rain's strict orders, Marisol and Teddy moved into an adjoining suite. Every meal served to Rain was prepared by Marisol in a secure, private kitchenette, tested thoroughly before it ever reached his lips.
Slowly, without the daily dose of Mikhail's "special vitamins," Rain’s strength began to return. The gray pallor left his face, replaced by a healthy bronze. He was able to stand, to walk to the tall windows, and to review his empire’s financial books for hours without fatigue.
Teddy became his shadow. The fearsome Don of Baltimore, a man who had ordered executions with a nod of his head, could frequently be seen sitting at his mahogany desk with a four-year-old girl perched on his knee, teaching her how to trace the lines of ancient maps. He learned her sign language, his large, scarred hands awkwardly mimicking the gestures for sun, ocean, and friend.
One evening, while Teddy was playing on the rug with her yellow plastic horse, Marisol brought in Rain’s evening tea.
"You're looking much better, Mr. Volkov," Marisol said, setting the tray down.
"It’s Rain, Marisol. When we are behind these doors, it’s just Rain," he said, looking at her with an intensity that made her chest tighten. Over the past days, she had seen the man behind the monster—a man fiercely loyal, deeply lonely, and harboring a profound sense of justice that the criminal world had tried to choke out of him.
"I found something in the old logistics ledger from the month Leo died," Marisol said, pulling a folded piece of paper from her pocket. "There was a ghost company registered under the name 'Northern Star Meds.' The shipping signatures weren't authorized by you. They were signed by Mikhail's private clinic."
Rain took the paper, his face turning to stone. "Mikhail has been using my shipping lines to import the raw chemicals for fentanyl and synthetic poisons. He’s been building his own empire using my resources, and when I started looking into the logistics leak, he killed Leo. When I got too close, he decided to kill me."
Suddenly, Teddy stood up from the rug. Her pink hearing aid whistled slightly. She walked over to the tea tray, sniffed the air, and immediately began to shake her head violently. She grabbed Marisol’s hand, pulling her away from the table.
Bad, Teddy signed frantically. The bad smell. Like the pills.
Rain stood up, his tall frame casting a long shadow. He walked to the tea tray. Marisol hadn't made this tea; it had been delivered by a junior kitchen staff member who claimed it was a gift from the family council.
Rain took a silver spoon and dipped it into the liquid, lifting a single drop to his tongue. Within seconds, his eyes widened, and he spat it into a napkin.
"The poison," Rain hissed. "They realize I'm recovering. They are getting desperate. They aren't waiting for the slow death anymore."

Before he could say another word, the fire alarms across the mansion began to scream. The red emergency lights flashed, and the sound of heavy gunfire erupted from the floor below.
The coup had arrived.
