Chapter 5 - The Purge of the Conspirators

With Julian securely behind the steel bars of a federal holding facility, the second phase of the reclamation began. A corporate empire cannot heal until every single piece of rot is cut out from the foundation, and Julian hadn't operated alone.

At 2:00 PM, a white security van marked with the Vance International logo pulled up to the gated entrance of a secluded luxury estate on the outskirts of Long Island—the multi-million-dollar mansion Julian had quietly purchased for Cynthia using Vanguard's development funds.

Cynthia stood in the grand foyer, surrounded by six matching Louis Vuitton suitcases, her hands shaking as she tried to punch an authorization code into her phone to wire her remaining personal funds to a private bank in Switzerland. Every time she pressed the submit button, the screen flashed with the same mocking error message:

"Damn it! Move! Please, move!" Cynthia shrieked, slamming the phone against the marble console table.

The heavy oak front doors of the mansion were suddenly unlocked from the outside, swinging open with a slow, deliberate grace. I stepped into the foyer, flanked by Marcus and a team of three federal asset forfeiture agents.

Cynthia froze, her eyes darting from my face to the badges of the agents behind me. "Clara... you can't be here. This is private property! The deed is in my name!"

"The deed was purchased with a corporate line of credit that was flagged as stolen property five hours ago, Cynthia," I said, walking slowly across the marble floor, looking around at the expensive crystal chandeliers and imported artwork that my company's profits had paid for. "In the eyes of the law, this isn't a mansion. It's evidence."

"I didn't know anything about the money!" Cynthia lied instantly, dropping to her knees and throwing her hands up in a theatrical display of innocence that mirrored her performance on Julian's arm last night. "He told me he was using his personal dividends! He told me you were onboard with the separation! I was a victim of his manipulation, Clara! Please, you have to believe me!"

"You can tell that to the federal grand jury tomorrow morning, Cynthia," Marcus said, stepping forward and tossing a thick folder of printed text messages onto the floor in front of her. "These are the logs from your private, encrypted chat application. The ones where you told Julian, and I quote, 'Make sure the freezer lock is set to manual rewrite so she can't use the emergency exit handle.' That makes you a co-conspirator to first-degree attempted murder."

Cynthia’s face turned an absolute, ghostly shade of gray. She looked down at the papers, her lips trembling as she realized her entire life of luxury, her designer clothes, her yachts, and her high-society ambitions had just turned into an eight-year sentence in a maximum-security women's correctional facility.

"Take her away," the lead asset agent commanded.

As the agents hoisted Cynthia from the floor and led her out toward the waiting transport van, she turned her head back toward me, her eyes filled with a venomous, desperate hatred. "You think you've won, Clara?! The company is ruined! The stock is worth nothing! You're the CEO of a graveyard!"

"The stock hit a bottom of forty dollars at noon, Cynthia," I said calmly, looking at her over my shoulder. "And at twelve-fifteen, the Vance Global Trust bought up every single discarded share, taking the company private. We don't answer to the public market anymore, Cynthia. We answer to me. Enjoy the prison uniform. I hear green isn't your color."

The heavy oak doors shut behind her, leaving the mansion completely silent.

Marcus walked over, placing a heavy, protective hand on my shoulder. "The purge is complete, Clara. Every executive who signed off on Julian’s fraudulent shipping manifests has been processed by the SEC. The company is clean."

"Then let's go back to the lab, Marcus," I said, a deep, peaceful smile finally breaking across my face. "I have a new automated sorting system to build."
