Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Reclamation

At 8:30 AM, the central headquarters of the Vanguard Group in downtown Manhattan looked like a war zone wrapped in glass and steel. The lobby was swarming with hundreds of financial journalists, federal investigators, and terrified employees whispering in corners about the immediate future of their paychecks.
The private executive elevator chimed as it arrived on the 40th floor—the boardroom level.
The double mahogany doors of the primary conference room were thrown open, and Julian stepped out, flanked by three criminal defense attorneys he had managed to secure using a cash retainer he kept hidden in a wall safe. He looked exhausted, his tie slightly askew, his eyes hollow with a desperate, manic survival instinct. He had spent the last six hours avoiding the police by using a corporate loophole that delayed his formal arrest warrant until the board of directors could hold an emergency vote.
"We still have the proxy votes, Julian," his lead lawyer whispered as they walked toward the long glass conference table where the fifteen members of the board were already sitting in a state of catatonic shock. "If we can convince the majority that the video is an advanced AI deepfake planted by a foreign competitor to drive down the stock price, we can maintain your voting control and secure a temporary corporate defense fund."
Julian took a deep, ragged breath, smoothing down his jacket as he stepped to the head of the table. He forced his old, commanding smile back onto his face.
"Gentlemen, ladies," Julian said, his voice booming with a fake confidence that filled the room. "I know the media cycle looks chaotic this morning, but I assure you, this is a highly coordinated, malicious cyber-attack designed to dismantle our market cap before the upcoming tech merger. My wife Clara has been experiencing severe psychological issues, and she has aligned herself with rival entities to—"
"Save your breath, Julian," a calm, clear voice interrupted from the far end of the room.
The high-backed chairman’s chair at the end of the table slowly rotated around.
Sitting in the seat wasn't the broken, traumatized woman Julian expected to be hiding in a hospital bed. It was me. I was wearing a tailored navy-blue power suit, my hair swept back smoothly, a single diamond necklace catching the morning light. On my right sat Alejandro Vargas, the chief prosecutor for the SEC, and on my left sat my brother, Marcus, holding a gold-plated master administrative key.
Julian froze, his mouth opening slightly as if he had just seen a ghost walk through a solid wall. "Clara... you... how are you up here? You should be in an intensive care unit!"
"The human body is remarkably resilient when it has something worth living for, Julian," I said, leaning forward, resting my hands flat on the polished wood of the table. "And right now, my only purpose is to watch the trash get taken out of my company."
"Your company?!" Julian roared, his corporate mask completely slipping, revealing the unhinged, violent predator beneath. "I am the majority shareholder! I hold forty-nine percent of the founder's equity, and my cousin holds the remaining three percent proxy block! You cannot remove me from this board without a two-thirds majority vote, Clara! The corporate bylaws protect the CEO!"
Alejandro Vargas stood up, opening a thick leather portfolio and sliding a set of unsealed federal court orders across the table toward the board members.
"Mr. Vance," Alejandro said, his voice ringing with a cold, judicial authority. "At 7:45 AM this morning, the Eastern District Court unsealed an indictment against your cousin for felony money laundering and insider trading. His three percent proxy block has been officially seized by the government and transferred to the administrative custody of the co-founder, Mrs. Clara Vance."
Julian’s face drained of color as the board members began to murmur, quickly sliding their chairs away from him as if he were radioactive.
"Furthermore," I said, tapping the master key on the console in front of me. The giant projector screen behind me illuminated with a live ledger of the company’s capital structure. "For eleven years, Julian, you thought the shell company that funded our initial research—The Aethelgard Trust—was just a tax shelter managed by your lawyers. You never dug deep enough to realize that the trust was a wholly owned subsidiary of my father's global estate. As of nine o'clock today, the trust has called in the entirety of Vanguard’s operational debt. You aren't just out of a job, Julian. You are completely bankrupt."
Julian stared at the screen, his fingers clawing at the edge of the mahogany table as his entire world, his billions, his titles, and his legacy vanished into a sea of red numbers right before his eyes.
"You... you trapped me," Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and unadulterated fury. "From the very beginning... you never trusted me."
"I trusted you for eight years, Julian," I said, standing up and looking down at him from the position of ultimate authority. "But I spent the last three years watching you turn our dream into a criminal playground. I didn't build the trap, Julian. I just turned on the lights so the world could watch you scurry."
The double doors of the boardroom swung open once more, and four federal marshals stepped inside, their badges catching the office lights.
"Julian Vance," the lead marshal said, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, corporate embezzlement, and federal wire fraud. Please step away from the table."

As the cold steel clicked around his wrists, Julian looked at me, his eyes filled with a desperate, pathetic pleading. "Clara, please... we can settle this outside the courts! Think of the brand! Think of what we built together!"
"The brand is fine, Julian," I said, turning my back on him as the marshals began to drag him out of the room. "We're just removing the dead weight."
