Chapter 3 - The Awakening of the Predator

Inside the luxury penthouse atop the Aria Luxury Highrise, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of expensive French perfume and premium scotch.
Julian stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out over the glittering skyline of the city. He held a crystal glass of Macallan 25 in his right hand, his left hand casually tracing the outline of Cynthia’s bare shoulder as she sat on the white leather sofa, scrolling through a digital catalog of luxury real estate in the South of France.
"It should be all over by now, right?" Cynthia asked, her voice dripping with a lazy, cat-like satisfaction. "The facility shuts down its automated internal circulation at midnight. It’s been nearly two hours, Julian. Are you sure the cameras didn't catch anything?"
"The cameras in Sector 4 have been looping a pre-recorded maintenance feed since 10:00 PM, my love," Julian said, taking a slow, smooth sip of his whiskey. "I personally checked the server log. Clara was smart—brilliant, even—but she was naive. She thought rules and corporate ethics would protect her in a kingdom I manage. Tomorrow morning, I will issue a heartbreaking statement to the press. A tragic loss for the tech world. Within three months, the insurance payout and the consolidated voting shares will clear the probate courts, and we will be completely untouchable."
Cynthia giggled, standing up and wrapping her arms around his waist from behind. "To the new Vanguard Group. Without the dead weight."
Suddenly, Julian’s personal smartphone—the one encrypted for high-level board communications—began to vibrate violently against the marble kitchen island. The ringtone wasn't his standard tone; it was the red-alert chime reserved exclusively for an emergency margin call from the company’s primary market-maker bank.
Julian frowned, untangling himself from Cynthia and picking up the device. "What is it, Arthur? It’s two in the morning. The New York exchange doesn't open for hours."
The voice on the other end wasn't Arthur. It was a cold, clinical, and completely unsympathetic federal agent.
"Julian Vance?" the voice intoned. "This is Special Agent Miller with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. We are currently executing a federal freezing injunction on all personal and corporate assets associated with your social security number and the Vanguard Holding Group. Do not attempt to access any digital banking applications. Remain exactly where you are."
Julian’s hand went completely rigid, the crystal glass slipping from his fingers and shattering across the imported Italian marble floor. The amber liquid spread like a stain across the white stone.
"What... what are you talking about?" Julian stammered, his polished billionaire voice instantly losing its composure. "This is highly illegal! I am the CEO of a Fortune 500 company! You can't freeze my assets without a congressional review!"
"Turn on the news, Mr. Vance," the agent said, and the line went dead.
Cynthia stepped back, her face twisting in confusion and fear. "Julian? What's wrong? What did he say?"
Before Julian could answer, the massive 85-inch smart television on the living room wall—which had been playing a soft jazz background track—abruptly cut to a live breaking-news broadcast from CNN.
The anchor’s face was grave. Behind her, a giant graphic split the screen: VANGUARD GROUP CEO IMPLIED IN ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE AND MASSIVE FORENSIC FRAUD ACCOUNTS.
"We are receiving unconfirmed reports and shocking, high-definition video evidence that appears to show Vanguard CEO Julian Vance locking his wife and co-founder, Clara Vance, inside a industrial sub-zero testing vault at their primary research facility late last night," the anchor reported. "The footage, which was leaked alongside thousands of internal documents detailing an international corporate embezzlement scheme, has caused an immediate, unprecedented collapse of the company’s international stock value..."
The screen flashed to a video clip.
It was the high-definition, crystal-clear feed from inside the freezer. It showed Julian’s face through the glass window, smiling perfectly as he uttered the words: “By the time the morning shift arrives at 6:00 AM, the Vanguard Group will be entirely mine.”
Julian staggered backward, his knees hitting the edge of the sofa, his eyes bulging as he watched his own face broadcast to millions of homes across the globe.
"No..." Julian whispered, his skin turning a horrific, pale shade of green. "No, I disabled that camera... I personally cleared the network routing table! How did she get the data out?!"
"Julian!" Cynthia shrieked, looking at her tablet, which was now flashing with hundreds of automated notifications from her social media accounts being flooded with vitriol and death threats. "The police! Look out the window!"

Julian looked down at the street sixty stories below.
The entire intersection had been blocked off by a fleet of twelve blue-and-white police cruisers, their flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the glass facade of the highrise like a violent, inescapable storm.
