Chapter 19: Rebuilding from the Ashes

Chapter 19: Rebuilding from the Ashes
With the settlement money and my freedom, I didn't buy a mansion or luxury sports cars. I bought a beautiful, historic brownstone house in a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood in Chicago, filled with natural light, large windows, and a massive backyard for Sophie to play in.
I also opened my own architectural and interior design firm: Evelyn Bennett & Associates—reclaiming the name and redefining it to stand for integrity, sustainability, and beautiful spaces built on honesty.
Within months, my firm became one of the most sought-after boutique agencies in the city. Clients loved our work, but more than that, they loved our story. We were a symbol of resilience.
Sophie’s physical wounds healed completely, leaving only a tiny, faint silver scar near her hairline, hidden beautifully by her curls. She returned to school, her laughter returning to fill our new home, her eyes bright with the innocent joy that had almost been stolen from her.
One Saturday afternoon, while we were painting Sophie’s new bedroom a vibrant, happy sky blue, she looked up at me, her hands covered in paint.
"Mommy?"
"Yes, sweetie?"
"Are the bad people gone forever?" she asked softly.

I knelt down beside her, wiping a speck of blue paint off her nose. "Yes, baby. They can never, ever hurt us again. We are completely safe."
She smiled, a brilliant, radiant expression that lit up the entire room, and threw her arms around my neck. "I love our new house, Mommy. It smells like happiness."
