Chapter 10: The Raid on Bennett & Associates

Chapter 10: The Raid on Bennett & Associates
The following Tuesday, at precisely 10:00 AM, the glass skyscraper that housed Bennett & Associates was surrounded by black SUVs.
Dozens of FBI agents, clad in windbreakers with tactical gear, marched through the pristine marble lobby. They bypassed the receptionist and stormed into the senior partners' corner offices on the 42nd floor.
Richard Bennett was mid-meeting with a high-profile client when the door was kicked open.
"Federal agents! Step away from the computers and put your hands on your heads!"
The scene was chaotic. Employees gasped as agents began packing computers, servers, and boxes of confidential files into evidence crates. My father tried to protest, asserting his legal stature, but he was pinned against his mahogany desk and slapped with a federal search warrant signed by a federal judge.
At the same time, agents raided my parents' mansion in the exclusive Gold Coast neighborhood, seizing luxury vehicles, jewelry, and safe deposit boxes.
The news broke live on TV. I watched the aerial footage from Clara’s penthouse. The banner across the screen read: “BENNETT & ASSOCIATES RAIDED BY FBI: SENIOR PARTNER INVESTIGATED FOR MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD.”
My mother, Carolyn, was caught on camera outside her home, shielding her face with a designer scarf as agents wheeled boxes out of her pristine garage. The illusion of perfection was shattered. The golden family was bleeding out in public.
That afternoon, a text message came from my mother’s personal cell phone.
May you like
Evelyn. Please. Call your father off. Call the lawyers off. We are your parents. We gave you life. Let’s talk like a family.
I deleted the message without replying. They didn't want to talk like a family when Sophie was bleeding on the floor. They only wanted to talk like a family when their empire was burning.
