Chapter 3 - The Retribution of the Betrayed

For the next three weeks, a fragile peace settled over the Romano estate.
Ava took her new role as house manager seriously. She reorganized the household, coordinated with the security teams, and managed the estate's vast staff with a natural grace and authority that surprised everyone—including Luca.
Mila was thriving. Under the care of specialized tutors and therapists, her confidence soared. She spent her afternoons in the estate’s private library, reading books on history, art, and language.
But the peace of the Romano family was built on a volcano.
One cool, crisp evening, Ava was in the kitchen preparing a quiet dinner for the three of them. Luca had begun joining them for meals, abandoning his formal dining room to sit at the small, cozy kitchen island.
Suddenly, the red emergency lights throughout the mansion began to pulse silently.
Ava’s heart leaped into her throat. She immediately dropped her chef’s knife and ran toward the hallway, but before she could reach the door, Luca appeared. He was already wearing a tactical vest over his black shirt, a heavy automatic pistol gripped in his hand.
"Ava," he said, his voice calm but commanding. "Take Mila to the panic room behind the library. Now."
"What is happening?" Ava gasped, her eyes wide with terror.
"The Moretti syndicate has breached the outer perimeter," Luca said, his eyes scanning the windows as the sound of distant gunfire began to echo through the thick stone walls. "They brought a strike team. They want the girl who read their lips."
Ava didn't waste another second. She ran to the library, grabbing Mila from her reading nook.
"Mommy? Why are the lights red?" Mila asked, her eyes wide with fear.
"It's just a game, sweetie," Ava lied, her voice shaking as she pulled Mila toward the secret bookshelf door. "We have to hide in the castle room. Remember the rules?"
"Stay quiet. Do not come out," Mila whispered.
"Exactly." Ava shoved Mila into the reinforced steel panic room. But as she went to step inside herself, she looked back through the library doors.
In the hallway, three men in tactical gear had breached the security doors. They were moving toward the library with heavy weapons. Luca was pinned down near the grand staircase, firing back with lethal precision, but he was outnumbered. One of the strike team members was flanking him, aiming directly at Luca's exposed shoulder.
Ava’s maternal protective instinct merged with something else—something fierce, wild, and entirely irrational. She couldn't let Luca die.
She grabbed a heavy, solid bronze sculpture of a falcon from the library desk.
As the flanking gunman stepped past the library door, his focus entirely on Luca, Ava lunged forward. With all the strength in her body, she slammed the bronze sculpture directly against the back of the gunman's head.
[IMPACT]
The gunman stumbles, his weapon firing
wildly into the ceiling as he crashes to
the marble floor.
The other two gunmen turned, their weapons aiming toward Ava.
"No!" Luca roared.
Before they could pull their triggers, Luca charged forward, his weapon firing in a rapid, deafening burst. The two men crumpled to the floor, neutralized instantly.
Luca threw himself toward Ava, checking her body for wounds, his hands shaking with a raw panic she had never seen on him before.
"Are you insane?!" Luca yelled, his voice cracking with emotion. He grabbed her shoulders, pulling her so close she could feel the frantic beat of his heart. "You could have been killed! I told you to go to the panic room!"
"I couldn't let them kill you!" Ava screamed back, her own adrenaline making her shake violently. "You are our protector! If you die, we die! And... and I couldn't bear the thought of this world without you!"
The words hung in the air, raw and undeniable.
Luca stared at her, his chest heaving. The dark, dangerous boss of Chicago looked completely undone by the waitress in front of him.
Without another word, he cupped her face in his hands and pulled her into a fierce, desperate kiss.
THE KISS
It was not gentle. It was a clash of
survival, heat, and a passion that had
been burning in the shadows for three weeks.
Ava kissed him back, her fingers tangling
in his hair, surrendering to the
dangerous love she could no
longer deny.

As the sirens of his reinforcements began to wail in the distance, Luca pulled back, resting his forehead against hers.
"I have you now, Ava," he whispered, his eyes burning with a possessive, eternal fire. "And I am never, ever letting you go."
