Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary of Iron and Silk

The chaotic roar of the ballroom faded the moment the heavy armored doors of the black SUV clicked shut.
Outside, the rain had turned into a torrential downpour, splashing violently against the reinforced glass windows. Inside, the vehicle was a silent cocoon of leather, mahogany, and high-end security.
Ava sat in the middle of the back seat, her chest heaving, her arms wrapped so tightly around Mila that her knuckles were entirely white. Mila’s head was buried in Ava’s chest, her small shoulders trembling, though she didn’t cry. She had spent her entire life learning how to stay quiet in the dark, and tonight was no exception.
Across from them sat Luca Romano.
LUCA ROMANO
"You saved my life, little one.
In my world, a debt of blood is paid in gold,
but a debt of life... is eternal."
He had discarded his formal suit jacket. His white silk shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing a dark, ancient tattoo of a family crest peaking out from his collarbone. He didn't look like a man who had almost been assassinated twenty minutes ago. His breathing was slow. His eyes, dark as the midnight sky over Lake Michigan, were fixed entirely on the trembling waitress and her silent daughter.
"Where are you taking us?" Ava’s voice cracked, sounding fragile in the quiet car. She tried to pull her shoulders back, to summon the pride that had kept her going through years of poverty, but the raw terror in her veins made her sway. "We don't belong in your car, Mr. Romano. Please. Just let us out at the nearest subway station."
"The subway?" Luca’s voice was a low baritone, smooth as aged whiskey. "The men who tried to poison me tonight are part of the Moretti syndicate. They saw your daughter point them out. They saw you shield her. If I let you walk out of this car, you and your child will not survive the night."
"We have nothing to do with your wars!" Ava cried, her eyes filling with hot tears. "We are nobody! I am a server. My daughter is eight years old. We just need to go home. We have rent to pay. I have a shift tomorrow—"
"You no longer have a shift, Ava," Luca interrupted quietly. "And you no longer have an apartment."
Ava froze. "What did you say?"
Luca slid a sleek, custom smartphone across the leather armrest toward her. The screen was lit up with a live video feed. Ava’s breath hitched as she recognized the dilapidated hallway of her small apartment building in North Chicago.
Two men in dark raincoats were currently standing outside her door. One of them held a crowbar, while the other held a silenced pistol, easily picking her cheap lock.

A sob escaped Ava’s lips. She slammed her hand over her mouth to keep from waking Mila, who had finally drifted into a light, exhausted sleep. The reality of her situation crashed down on her like a physical blow. Her home, her sanctuary, her tiny haven of safety had been violated in a matter of minutes.
"They move fast," Luca said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion, yet his eyes burned with a dark, protective fire. "They wanted to eliminate the witnesses before my security could secure you. But they underestimated me. And they certainly underestimated your daughter."
He looked down at Mila’s sleeping form. His large, scarred hand moved slightly, as if he wanted to touch the little girl's dark curls, but he held back, as if afraid his world would stain her innocence.
"My estate in Lake Forest is fortified," Luca continued, looking back up at Ava. "It is the only place in this state where you and Mila are safe. You will stay there. My doctors will look after your daughter's migraines. My security will protect your lives."
"And what do you want from us?" Ava whispered, her eyes filled with defensive suspicion. "Men like you do not offer charity, Mr. Romano. What is the price of this golden cage?"
Luca leaned forward, his face mere inches from hers. The scent of rain, expensive cologne, and sandalwood enveloped her.
"I don't offer charity, Ava," he murmured, his eyes dropping to her lips before returning to her eyes. "I offer a alliance. Your daughter has a gift—she can read lips across a crowded room. She saw what my own security missed. I want to keep her safe, and in return, I want you to trust me."
"Trust a mafia boss?" Ava let out a bitter, wet laugh. "I’d rather trust the devil."
"The devil doesn't have an army keeping your daughter alive tonight," Luca replied softly. "But I do."
The SUV slowed down, passing through a set of massive, black iron gates flanked by armed men in tactical gear. The headlights swept across a sprawling, stone mansion overlooking the dark, thrashing waves of Lake Michigan.

As the car stopped, Luca stepped out into the rain, holding a massive black umbrella. He reached in, his powerful arms effortlessly lifting the sleeping Mila from Ava's lap. He held the little girl against his chest with an unexpected, heartbreaking gentleness.
"Come, Ava," Luca said, holding out his hand to her. "The storm is here, but you are inside now."
