Chapter 2 - The Red Stamp and the Golden Cage

The master guest suite of the Romano estate was larger than Ava's entire apartment.
The walls were lined with soft, cream silk, the floors covered in plush Persian rugs, and a massive marble fireplace crackled with a warm, comforting fire. A team of private pediatricians had already visited, checking on Mila's hearing and providing her with specialized, gentle medication for her sensory migraines.
By noon the next day, Mila was sitting in a sunlit bay window, happily coloring in a brand-new book, while wearing a soft, lavender cashmere sweater that had been delivered by a high-end boutique hours earlier.
But Ava could not rest. She paced the floor, her old server uniform replaced by a simple, borrowed silk robe that felt far too expensive for her skin.
A quiet knock sounded at the door.
Ava stood defensive as the door opened, revealing Luca. He had changed into a casual black sweater, his dark hair slightly damp from the autumn air outside. He held a silver tray containing two mugs of hot chocolate and a plate of fresh pastries.
"May I?" he asked.
Ava didn't answer, but she didn't block him either. Luca walked over to Mila, placing the tray on the low table near the window. He knelt beside her, his towering frame making himself small to be at her eye level.
MILA & LUCA
[Mila watches Luca's mouth with intense focus.]
Luca: "Do you like the chocolate, Mila?"
Mila: (Nods shyly) "It's sweet. Like the flowers at the party."
Luca: "You are a very brave girl. You saved me."
"I saw them talking," Mila whispered, her voice slightly muffled but clear. "They were angry. They had bad thoughts on their faces."
"They will never hurt you again," Luca promised, his voice carrying an absolute, unyielding vow. "I have sent them away where they can never speak of you or your mother again."
Ava walked over, her hands clenched in the pockets of her robe. "You shouldn't make promises you can't keep, Mr. Romano. The world we live in... it doesn't just let people go."
Luca stood up, his gaze turning to Ava. "The world you lived in is gone, Ava. This morning, my legal team took care of a few things."
He pulled a small leather folder from his pocket and laid it on the table. Ava opened it, her eyes widening in sheer shock as she looked at the documents inside.
Document 1: A deed of ownership for her North Chicago apartment building, fully purchased by a holding company under her name.
Document 2: A receipt of payment in full for all her outstanding debts, including her medical bills, rent, and utility loans.
Document 3: A formal letter of resignation from the Sterling Foundation catering service, with a severance package of $150,000.
"What is this?" Ava gasped, her voice trembling as she dropped the folder. "I can't accept this! This is bribe money. I am not a charity case, Mr. Romano! I have worked for every single dollar I have ever earned!"
"It is not charity," Luca said, his eyes darkening with a sudden, intense heat. He stepped closer, his shadow falling over her, but Ava did not back down. "Your landlord was a parasite who threatened you. The catering company was underpaying you while you worked eighteen-hour shifts on broken ankles. You saved my life, Ava. If I did not clear these paths for you, I would be no better than the men who tried to kill me."
"I don't want your money!" Ava cried, her pride flaring up like a shield. "I want my life back! I want my daughter to go to a normal school, to live a normal life without men with guns guarding our door!"
"There is no 'normal' life for you anymore," Luca said, his voice dropping to a low, husky whisper. He reached out, his long, warm fingers gently catching her chin, forcing her to look up into his burning gaze. "The Moretti family knows your face. They know Mila's face. If you leave this house, they will use you to get to me. You are tied to me now, Ava. Whether you like it or not."
Ava’s breath caught. The touch of his fingers sent a electric shock straight down her spine. She wanted to pull away, to bite his hand, to scream at him—but as she looked into his eyes, she saw a profound, aching loneliness that mirrored her own. He wasn't just a monster. He was a protector who had been forced to become a beast to keep his world from tearing him apart.
"Then let me work," Ava whispered, her voice shaking. "If I am stuck here, let me earn my keep. I won't be your kept woman, Luca. I won't let my daughter see me survive on blood money."
Luca stared at her, his thumb gently brushing across her soft lower lip. A dark, possessive smile touched his face.
May you like
"You want to work?" he murmured. "Fine. My estate needs a house manager. Someone who can handle the staff, the events, and... someone who can keep me from turning into the animal everyone thinks I am. The salary is yours. But you stay here. With me."
Ava swallowed hard, her heart pounding against her ribs. "Deal."
