The handbag hit the marble floor with a sharp, humiliating crack.

Lipstick rolled beneath a champagne table.

Pearls scattered like broken teeth.

A diamond bracelet slid across the polished stone and stopped near the red satin hem of Margaret Whitmore’s gown.

The wealthy matriarch looked down at the woman in white and smiled with cold victory.

“So this is what you were hiding.”

Around them, the ballroom froze.

Guests in tuxedos and black gowns stared.

The fireplace burned behind them.

A large TV above the mantel reflected nothing yet but the chandelier light.

Isabella Vale stood perfectly still, her white evening dress untouched except for the shame Margaret tried to throw onto her. Her black quilted handbag lay open on the floor, its contents exposed to strangers.

But Isabella did not cry.

She did not kneel for the scattered jewelry.
