Chapter 1: The Gathering Storm

Chapter 1: The Gathering Storm
The silence in the grand lobby of Apex Vanguard Bank was absolute. You could hear a pin drop on the Italian marble floor. The security guard, whose name tag read "Marcus," felt the color drain from his face. His hands, which had been confidently crossed moments ago, now trembled by his side.
"M-Madam Chairwoman..." Marcus stammered, his voice barely a whisper.
Evelyn Vance, the twenty-six-year-old billionaire who had inherited the Vance Financial Empire after her father’s sudden passing, didn’t look at him with anger. Instead, her eyes were calm, cold, and calculating. She adjusted the strap of her cheap canvas bag—a bag that actually contained the private ledger of the bank's offshore accounts.
"Stand down, Marcus," CEO Richard Sterling said, his voice laced with panic. Richard, a man who usually commanded the respect of Wall Street, was sweating through his bespoke Tom Ford suit. "You are lucky the Chairwoman is merciful. Pack your things after this."
"No," Evelyn interrupted softly. Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried to every corner of the crowded lobby. "Marcus was doing his job. He was polite. But the people behind him..." She turned her gaze slowly toward the VIP lounge, where a group of wealthy socialites and arrogant investors were pretending to look at their phones. "...they need a lesson in humility."
Among the crowd was Chloe Vance, Evelyn’s step-cousin. Chloe was dressed in head-to-toe Chanel, holding a glass of champagne. Her jaw had dropped so low it looked painful. Chloe had spent the last three years mocking Evelyn for living a simple life, believing Evelyn had been cut out of the family will.
"Evelyn? This has to be a joke!" Chloe stepped forward, her heels clicking aggressively. "Richard, are you out of your mind? She’s a fraud! Her father left everything to my side of the family. She’s just a charity case!"
Richard turned around, his expression fiercely protective. "Miss Chloe, you are speaking to the majority shareholder of Apex Vanguard. Your family owns a mere 4% of the legacy stock. Madam Evelyn owns 51%. I suggest you watch your mouth, or we will liquidate your family’s assets by the end of the business day."
The crowd gasped. The wealthy clients who had smiled amusedly just minutes ago now shifted uncomfortably. Some secretly slipped away, terrified of being associated with Chloe.

Evelyn walked past Chloe without making eye contact, as if Chloe were nothing but a ghost. "Richard, call an emergency board meeting. Now. We have a rat in the house."
As Evelyn entered the private golden elevator, she glanced back at the stunned crowd. The game had just begun. Her father hadn't died of a heart attack; he had been poisoned. And the ledger in her bag held the names of everyone involved.
