Chapter 10 - THE CHILD THEY COULD NOT ERASE

The baby was born at twenty-seven weeks.

A girl.

She weighed less than a kilogram and was immediately placed inside the neonatal intensive care unit.

Valeria survived the delivery, but severe blood loss left her unconscious for several hours.

Alejandro stood beside the incubator wearing a sterile gown.

His daughter’s hand was so small that her fingers barely wrapped around the tip of his thumb.

“Hello, little warrior,” he whispered.

Machines breathed and beeped around her.

Through the glass walls, reporters waited for updates.

The entire country had followed the Aranda scandal.

But in that room, the empire no longer mattered.

There were no board meetings.

No inherited mansions.

No family reputation.

Only a fragile child fighting for every breath.

Alejandro named her Lucía, after the paramedic who had refused to let Esther block the ambulance.

When Valeria finally woke, Alejandro was sitting beside her.

“The baby?”

“Alive.”

Valeria began to cry.

“Can I see her?”

“As soon as the doctor allows it.”

He showed her a photograph.

Valeria touched the screen with shaking fingers.

“She’s beautiful.”

“She looks like you.”

“She looks angry.”

Alejandro smiled through his tears.

“She is an Aranda, after all.”

The smile disappeared from Valeria’s face.

“I don’t want her growing up under that name’s shadow.”

“She won’t.”

Alejandro explained that he had resigned as chief executive of the family corporation.

He was placing his shares into an independent structure and removing every relative connected to the crimes.

“What will you do?” she asked.

“Learn how to be a father.”

“And us?”

Alejandro looked toward the wedding ring still resting inside his pocket.

“That decision belongs to you.”

Valeria studied him.

“Do you love me?”

“Yes.”

“Did you love me when you ripped away that blanket?”

Alejandro lowered his eyes.

“I loved my pride more.”

His honesty silenced the room.

“I can forgive fear,” Valeria said. “But I don’t know if I can forget that you saw terror in my eyes and called it guilt.”

“You shouldn’t forget.”

He placed the ring on the table between them.

“I need to become someone who deserves to wear this again.”

For the next three months, Alejandro remained at the hospital.

He slept in chairs.

He learned how to change tiny diapers through the openings of an incubator.

He read children’s stories to Lucía even when doctors said she could barely hear him.

He attended therapy.

He gave investigators unrestricted access to company records.

He testified against Esther, Marcela, Rogelio and Dr. Montalvo.

The evidence revealed years of embezzlement, bribery, blackmail and medical abuse.

Rogelio was arrested at a private airfield while attempting to leave the country.

Montalvo accepted a plea agreement and provided detailed testimony.

Marcela continued blaming her mother until prosecutors played the hospital recording in court.

Esther never apologized.

Even during sentencing, she looked at Alejandro and said, “One day you will understand that everything I did was for this family.”

Alejandro answered from the witness stand.

“You did it for control.”

Esther received a lengthy prison sentence.

So did Marcela and Montalvo.

When Lucía was finally strong enough to leave the hospital, nurses lined the corridor to say goodbye.

Valeria carried the baby.

Alejandro carried the medical bag.

Outside, hundreds of cameras waited.

A reporter shouted, “Mr. Aranda, is your marriage over?”

Alejandro looked at Valeria but did not answer for her.

She stepped toward the microphones.

“My marriage is private,” she said. “But what happened to me should not remain private.”

She announced the creation of the Lucía Foundation, funded by Ricardo’s trust.

It would provide legal, medical and emergency housing assistance for women trapped in powerful or abusive families.

The announcement spread across the country.

Valeria was no longer the frightened woman hidden beneath a blanket.

She had become the voice Esther had tried to silence.

May you like

But one question remained.

Would she ever return home with Alejandro?
