Chapter 7 - THE SON WHO FINALLY SAW THE TRUTH

Alejandro listened to the recording three times.

Each time, his father’s warning became more painful.

Esther had not improvised the campaign against Valeria.

She had planned it years earlier.

She knew her son’s weakness.

Pride.

She knew a suggestion of infidelity would blind him faster than any direct order.

And she had been right.

Alejandro walked out of the hospital room and stood alone near the darkened windows.

Mexico City glowed beneath him.

He owned buildings across the skyline.

He employed thousands of people.

Yet inside his own home, he had failed to protect the person who trusted him most.

Diego approached quietly.

“She asked for you.”

Alejandro did not move.

“She should hate me.”

“Maybe she does.”

Alejandro looked at him sharply.

Diego continued.

“But she still asked for you.”

When Alejandro returned to the room, Valeria was sitting upright.

She had changed into a clean hospital gown. The bruises remained visible on her arms.

He sat beside her.

“I’m sorry.”

She said nothing.

“I should have listened to you.”

“Yes.”

The simple answer hurt more than an accusation.

“I let my family convince me that love meant loyalty to them.”

Valeria looked down at her hands.

“You didn’t need much convincing.”

Alejandro accepted the truth.

“No.”

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Then he removed his wedding ring and placed it on the bedside table.

“I don’t deserve to ask you to forgive me.”

Valeria looked at the ring.

“What are you doing?”

“Giving you a choice.”

His voice shook.

“When you are safe, if you want to leave me, I will not fight you. You will have full financial independence, your own home and complete custody arrangements determined on your terms.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“You think money fixes everything.”

“No. I think freedom is the first thing I owe you.”

Before Valeria could respond, her monitor began to sound.

A nurse rushed into the room.

Valeria gripped the bed rails as a painful contraction seized her.

Doctors surrounded her.

Alejandro was pushed into the corridor again.

For nearly an hour, he heard urgent voices behind the closed doors.

Finally, the obstetrician emerged.

“We stopped the contractions, but your wife must remain under strict observation. The next seventy-two hours are critical.”

“Will the baby survive?”

“We are doing everything possible.”

Alejandro sat outside the room until dawn.

At 5:17 a.m., his lawyer arrived with new information.

Esther had been released temporarily because prosecutors claimed the evidence did not yet prove she had personally administered the injections.

Dr. Montalvo had suddenly withdrawn his confession.

Uncle Rogelio had disappeared.

And Marcela had gone on national television.

She sat beneath studio lights wearing a modest black dress, tears shining in her eyes.

“My brother is being manipulated by his wife and her lover,” she told the interviewer. “Valeria wants control of the family fortune.”

Then she revealed her final weapon.

A DNA laboratory report.

According to the document, Alejandro was not the father of Valeria’s baby.

The report spread across social media within minutes.

Reporters surrounded the hospital entrances.

Valeria saw the headline on a nurse’s phone.

Her face went white.

“I have never been with anyone else,” she whispered.

Alejandro stared at the laboratory logo.

Six months earlier, Marcela had insisted on arranging the family’s prenatal genetic screening.

He finally understood.

The DNA test was not proof.

It was another trap.

But convincing the world would require more than his word.

He called the hospital director.

“Take my blood.”

May you like

Then he looked through the glass at the cameras gathering outside.

“And invite every reporter in Mexico to wait for the result.”
