Chapter 2: The Red Velvet Cage

Chapter 2: The Red Velvet Cage

The ride in the back of Arthur’s sleek, black Maybach was dead silent, save for the quiet hum of the rain against the glass. I sat as far away from him as possible, clutching my evening bag to my chest, my mind spinning at a million miles an hour.

"Why?" I finally blurted out, the question tearing from my throat. "Why would you do that? To humiliate Julian? You could have ruined him a hundred different ways. You didn't need to drag me into your corporate warfare."

Arthur turned his head. In the dim light of the city streetlamps, his eyes looked surprisingly soft, devoid of the coldness he had shown in the ballroom.

"You think I did that to hurt Julian?" Arthur asked, his voice low and resonant. "Clara, I don't care enough about Julian to orchestrate a stunt like that. I did it for you."

I let out a bitter, breathless laugh. "For me? You don't even know me. I'm just the woman who organizes his galas and stays out of the press."

"I know exactly who you are," Arthur countered smoothly. "I know you built his empire from the ground up while he took the credit. I know you designed the architecture for his flagship towers. And I know he has spent more than two decades trying to make you believe you are nothing without him." He leaned slightly closer. "I’ve watched you from afar for three years, Clara. Tonight, I couldn't sit back and watch him destroy your spirit any longer."

Before I could process his words, my phone exploded with notifications. Messages from society friends, tabloid journalists, and, predictably, dozens of furious texts from Julian.

“You embarrassment. Get back to the house right now. You’re ruining my reputation. We need to issue a statement immediately.”

A wave of familiar anxiety washed over me, a suffocating panic that usually made me capitulate to his demands. But Arthur gently reached over and took the phone from my trembling hands. He clicked it off and slid it into his pocket.

"You don't have to answer to him anymore," Arthur said firmly. "Tonight, you stay at my estate. Tomorrow, we rewrite your story."

When we arrived at his residence—a breathtaking, sprawling modern estate overlooking the ocean—Arthur didn't try to initiate anything. He escorted me to a luxurious guest suite filled with fresh flowers, a warm fire, and a wardrobe of clothes exactly in my size.

"Rest, Clara," he said, standing at the doorway. "You are safe here. Nobody can hurt you anymore."

As the door closed, I collapsed onto the plush bed, crying tears of relief. For the first time in twenty-two years, I wasn't sleeping under the roof of a man who despised me. But as the adrenaline began to fade, a cold dread set in. Julian was a dangerous, vindictive man. He would not let me go easily, especially not to Arthur Vance.
