Chapter 4 - The Midnight Court

The New Haven women’s health clinic was quiet on Saturday morning. Adrian sat in the corner of the small examination room, looking entirely out of place in his tailored suit against the pastel walls and medical posters. Elena sat on the edge of the examination table, her hands resting defensively over her stomach.

The technician applied the cold gel to her abdomen and moved the transducer. For a few seconds, there was only the static hum of the machine. Then, a rhythmic, rapid sound filled the room.

Thump-thump-thump-thump.

Adrian’s breath caught in his throat. It sounded like a galloping horse. It was the loudest, most terrifyingly beautiful sound he had ever heard. On the black-and-white monitor, a tiny, flickering white shape appeared.

"There it is," the technician smiled, pointing at the screen. "Ten weeks, four days. Heartrate is one hundred and sixty-five beats per minute. Very strong, very healthy."

Adrian looked from the screen to Elena. She was staring at the monitor, tears streaming silently down her face. Without thinking, Adrian reached out and took her hand. This time, she didn't pull away. Her fingers gripped his with a fierce, desperate strength. In that small room, surrounded by the sound of his child's heartbeat, Adrian knew there was no turning back. He was no longer fighting for an empire or a legacy. He was fighting for survival.

The moment was shattered when Adrian’s secondary phone vibrated in his pocket. He stepped out into the hallway to answer it.

"Adrian," Lucas’s voice came through, sharp and urgent. "Grant just found out about the shipping accounts being frozen. He’s panicked. He and Roland have called an emergency meeting of the senior captains at the old distillery in South Boston for tonight at eleven. They’re telling the family that you've gone rogue after Elena’s 'betrayal' and that you're planning to liquidate the assets and run."

"How many captains are attending?" Adrian asked, his eyes hardening into flint.

"All five of the regional heads," Lucas said. "They think they’re voting on your replacement. Grant has brought in twelve mercenary shooters from the New York border to secure the perimeter."

"Good," Adrian said. "Let them all gather in one place. It saves me the trouble of hunting them down individually. Lucas, are the loyalist units ready?"

"We have thirty men, completely dark, waiting for your word. We’ve bypassed the main armory. We have everything we need."

"Move them into position by ten o'clock," Adrian ordered. "I’ll be there by ten-thirty. And Lucas? Tell the men to bring extra zip-ties. We aren't going there to negotiate."

Adrian walked back into the examination room. Elena was wiping the gel from her stomach, her expression guarded once more.

"I have to settle this tonight," Adrian said, walking over to her and gently helping her down from the table. "I’ve set up a secure penthouse in downtown Boston under Malcolm’s name. Daniel and four of my best men will be with you. No one knows this location exists."

Elena looked into his eyes, searching for the ruthlessness that had once terrified her. She found it, but it wasn't directed at her anymore. It was a shield placed between her and the rest of the world.

"Don't die, Adrian," she said quietly, her hand touching his lapel. "Don't let them win after what they did."

"They’ve already lost," Adrian said, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "They just haven't realized the executioner has arrived."
