Chapter 2 - The Silent War

By noon on Friday, the atmosphere inside the Vale organization was thick with unexpressed dread. Adrian sat at the head of the conference table in the secure basement of his Boston headquarters. To his right sat Grant Mercer, reviewing tactical maps of rival territories. To his left sat Roland Pierce, adjusting his silk tie and reviewing legal briefs regarding the fallout from the Whitmore Road shooting.

To anyone watching, Adrian was the same calculating, ruthless leader he had always been. He authorized retaliation strikes against minor Moretti distribution hubs—strikes he knew would keep his soldiers occupied while he moved his personal assets into position.

"The Morettis are pushing hard on the northern border," Grant said, tapping a finger against the map. "We need to hit them where it hurts. If we don't show strength now, especially after what happened with Elena, the other families will think we're fractured."

Adrian watched Grant’s finger on the map. It was the same hand that had pulled him out of tight spots in their twenties. The hypocrisy was staggering. "The Morettis will pay, Grant. Every single person involved in that ambush will face the consequences. I'm personally reviewing the security footage from the perimeter cameras on the night of the leak."

Roland Pierce smiled smoothly, his silver hair catching the fluorescent lights. "The legal team has already secured the digital logs, Adrian. There’s no need to stress yourself with the technicalities. We’ve verified that the data transmission originated from the east-wing router. It matches the timeline of Elena’s access codes."

"Splendid work, Roland," Adrian said, his voice entirely devoid of inflection. "You’ve always been thorough."

"Just protecting the family, Boss," Roland replied.

Adrian stood up, leaning over the table. "That’s what we all want. Protection. I’ve decided to temporarily transfer all financial oversight of our primary maritime shipping accounts to a centralized escrow until this internal investigation is concluded. We can't risk another leak affecting our liquidity."

Grant’s eyes flicked up instantly, a microscopic tightening around his jaw. "Adrian, that could disrupt our supply lines. The captains are already nervous. Changing the financial structure right now looks like panic."

"It’s not panic, Grant. It’s insurance," Adrian said, holding his underboss’s gaze until Grant was forced to look away. "The transition happens at midnight. Roland, make sure the authorizations are signed."

As Adrian walked out of the conference room, he knew he had just accelerated their timeline. By freezing the shipping accounts, he had cut off the funding Grant and Roland needed to pay off the corrupt Port Authority officials and the mercenary crew they had hired for the coup. They would be forced to move against him sooner than they planned.

Back in his private office, Adrian's phone buzzed with an encrypted text message from Lucas.

Car tracked to a motel off I-95 near New Haven. She checked in under her maiden name. Local assets deployed for surveillance. She’s safe, but she’s not alone. A black sedan with Connecticut plates has been idling across the street for two hours. Grant's men.

Adrian’s chest tightened. Grant wasn't just watching her; he was waiting for the right moment to finish the job and blame it on a retaliatory strike by the Morettis.

"Prepare the car," Adrian told Daniel, a young, fierce guard who had replaced Lucas as his immediate detail.

"Where are we going, Boss?"

"New Haven," Adrian said, checking the magazine of his custom Sig Sauer. "And Daniel? If anyone asks Grant or Roland for my location, you tell them I'm visiting my father's grave."
