Chapter 2: The Video Didn't Show What They Expected
Detectives removed the memory card while crime scene technicians photographed every inch of the area.
My mother suddenly became nervous.
"That camera doesn't work."
No one answered her.
A detective inserted the memory card into a portable viewer.
Everyone stood silently.
The first few hours showed employees throwing away catering supplies.
Nothing unusual.
Then...
At 5:42 a.m., the footage changed.
Vanessa appeared.
She was carrying Lily.
My daughter wasn't awake.
Her head rested limply against Vanessa's shoulder.
Behind Vanessa walked my mother.
She opened the dumpster lid.
Vanessa hesitated.
My mother pointed inside.
Vanessa lowered Lily into the dumpster.
Then they both closed the lid.
Neither woman looked back.
The recording continued.
For nearly ninety minutes...
No one returned.
The detective stopped the video.
The silence was overwhelming.
Emma, who had been holding her grandmother's hand, looked up innocently.
"Grandma said Lily was sleeping."
Every officer heard it.
My mother's knees nearly buckled.
My father finally exploded.
"This recording doesn't prove anything!"
"It proves enough," the detective replied.
"You both need to place your hands where I can see them."
My mother began crying.
Vanessa screamed.
My father demanded a lawyer.

And Emma...
Emma started crying because she still didn't understand why everyone was angry.
