Chapter 1: The Officer Opened the Dumpster… Then Noticed Something Everyone Else Missed

The officer stepped out, surveyed the scene, looked from Lily to my father, and asked one simple question.

"Who found the child?"

"I did," Marcus answered immediately.

The paramedics rushed toward us, gently lifting Lily onto a stretcher while checking her breathing and heart rate. One of them frowned after shining a flashlight into her eyes.

"She's heavily sedated."

The words landed like ice in my chest.

Sedated?

Lily had been perfectly healthy the night before.

One paramedic looked at me.

"Has she taken any medication recently?"

I shook my head so hard my neck hurt.

"Never. She only takes children's vitamins."

The paramedic exchanged a look with his partner.

"This wasn't accidental."

Before I could ask what he meant, another officer approached my parents.

"Sir... ma'am... we'd like everyone to remain here."

My father scoffed.

"This is a family misunderstanding."

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"My niece likes playing hide-and-seek. My sister is just dramatic."

The officer didn't react.

Instead, he walked toward the dumpster where Marcus and I had found Lily.

He climbed onto the edge, shining his flashlight inside.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he called another officer over.

"You need to see this."

They carefully pulled several trash bags aside.

Underneath them wasn't just garbage.

It was a folded pink blanket.

Lily's favorite blanket.

Inside it...

They found an empty prescription bottle.

The label had been peeled away.

Another officer slipped on gloves and picked it up carefully.

"Possible evidence."

The mood changed instantly.

This wasn't child neglect anymore.

It looked like attempted murder.

Then one officer noticed something else.

Near the bottom of the dumpster was a tiny hidden security camera.

Not installed by the city.

Installed recently.

Someone had been recording the dumpster.

The officer slowly turned toward my father.

"Who owns this camera?"

For the first time that morning...

My father's face lost all its color.
