Chapter 1 - The Choice at Dawn

Victor Romano stared at the back of the young woman’s head, his finger resting lightly on the cold steel trigger of his Beretta 9mm. The morning sun had begun to peek through the heavy velvet drapes of his West Wing study, casting a sliver of golden light across the polished mahogany furniture and the Persian rug.

He didn't pull the trigger. He didn't even yell for Paulie.

Instead, Victor lowered the gun back into his shoulder holster, his movements smooth and deliberate malgré the throbbing pain radiating from his left shoulder. He looked closer at the girl. She looked impossibly small pinned against his broad chest. Her face was pale, with dark purple circles under her closed eyes, and her breath came in soft, rhythmic sighs that pressed her ribs against his chest.

His hand, which had been locked around her waist all night, slowly unclasped. For a man who hadn't slept more than two consecutive hours in five years without whiskey or sedatives, waking up refreshed felt like a strange magic. And the catalyst was a exhausted maid who smelled like cheap grocery-store soap and floor cleaner.

Tessa shifted slightly, murmuring something incoherent in her sleep, her nose brushing the exposed skin of Victor’s throat.

Victor froze. Every instinct told him to shove her off. In the Romano syndicate, weakness was punished by execution, and intimacy was a liability. But looking down at her chapped hands—hands that bore the marks of relentless labor—something stirred inside his hardened chest.

Carefully, using only his right arm, Victor slid himself out from beneath her, easing her down onto the leather sofa. Tessa didn't wake up; she simply curled into a small ball on the warm spot he had left behind, hugging her knees.

Victor stood up, his jaw set as pain flared in his torn shoulder. He walked over to his grand oak desk, pulled open a drawer, and retrieved a confidential black ledger. He opened it to the "M" section.

Liam Moore. Debt: $250,000. Interest: $15,000 monthly. Collateral: Tessa Moore (Contractual Domestic Servant).

Victor stared at the entry. He remembered Liam Moore—a pathetic, sniveling gambler who had gambled away his family’s savings at the Romano casino in Atlantic City, then offered his sister’s labor to keep himself from being thrown into the bay.

Victor picked up a fountain pen. With a quick, decisive stroke, he drew a thick line through Liam Moore’s name, marking the entire debt: PAID IN FULL.

He closed the ledger just as the heavy study doors creaked open. Paulie stepped inside, carrying a mug of black coffee and a fresh medical kit, flanked by two armed guards.

Paulie stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes widened as he saw Tessa sleeping on Victor’s personal leather couch, surrounded by discarded rags and a bucket of murky water.

"Boss?" Paulie’s hand instinctively drifted toward his jacket lining. "What the hell is she doing in here? Did she try something? I'll throw her out the third-floor window right now—"

"Touch her, Paulie," Victor’s voice cut through the air like a razor, cold, flat, and absolute, "and I’ll put a bullet through your kneecap before you take a step."

Paulie went rigid, his hand freezing over his holster. "Boss... she's just a maid. She saw you bleeding. She knows—"

"She knows nothing except how to do her job," Victor snapped, walking up to his chief enforcer. "Clear her brother's ledger. As of this morning, Tessa Moore is no longer a debt worker."

"What is she, then?" Paulie asked, genuinely bewildered.

Victor turned his head, looking back at the sleeping girl on the sofa. Her eyelids fluttered as the morning light caught her face.

"She's off-limits," Victor said softly. "To everyone in this city."
