Chapter 2 - The Fortress on the Red Rocks

The Brooks estate did not look like a house; it looked like a modern fortress carved directly into the towering red cliffs of Sedona. High concrete walls, steel gates, and armed security personnel surrounded five acres of pristine, lit grounds.

When the convoy pulled through the security checkpoint, three guards in tactical gear bowed their heads respectfully as Nathan’s Escalade passed.

Noah woke up, pressing his face against the tinted glass. "Mommy... is this a castle?"

"It's our home now, buddy," I whispered, still feeling as though I was living through a fever dream.

The vehicle stopped beneath a vaulted portico. A tall, impeccably dressed older woman with silver hair pulled back into a neat bun stepped forward to open the door. Her expression was stern, her posture rigid.

"Welcome back, Mr. Brooks," she said, her voice smooth and formal. "The judge is waiting in the library, as requested."

"Thank you, Mrs. Gable," Nathan stepped out, then turned and offered his hand to help me and the children out. "This is Emily, my wife. And her children, Noah and Lily. From this moment on, her word in this house is law, second only to mine. Is that understood?"

Mrs. Gable’s sharp eyes flicked over my worn jeans, my dusty shoes, and my tangled hair. For a fraction of a second, disapproval flashed in her eyes—the judgment of an old-money housekeeper looking at a homeless stray.

But she bowed her head immediately. "Understood, sir. Welcome, Mrs. Brooks."

Nathan noticed the brief look. He didn't raise his voice, but his tone turned as cold as arctic ice. "Mrs. Gable."

"Yes, sir?"

"If I ever see you look at my wife with anything less than absolute reverence again, you will be off this property within ten minutes without a severance package. Am I clear?"

Mrs. Gable went pale. "Extremely clear, Mr. Brooks. Forgive me."

I looked at Nathan, surprised by how swiftly and ruthlessly he defended my dignity. He glanced down at me, placing a hand gently against the small of my back.

"I told you," Nathan murmured into my ear. "No one disrespects you again. Not even the staff."

Ten minutes later, inside a grand library lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves and a roaring fireplace, a private judge finalized our marriage license. The legal documents were stamped, sealed, and transmitted to the state records.

With a stroke of a pen, I went from a penniless wanderer to the legally recognized wife of the most powerful man in the Southwest.

After the judge left, Nathan called a young, gentle woman named Sarah—a member of the domestic staff—to escort Noah and Lily upstairs to the children’s wing. The wing had been hurriedly prepared, filled with plush toys, new clothes, and soft feather beds.

Once the children were asleep, Nathan led me to the master suite.

It was breathtaking—a vast room with glass walls overlooking the illuminated red rocks, a king-sized bed wrapped in silk, and a fireplace warming the cool night air.

"This is your room," Nathan said, standing near the doorway, keeping a respectful distance. "My private quarters are down the hall through that connected office door. You can lock it from your side if it makes you feel comfortable."

I stood near the edge of the bed, feeling small in the luxury of the room. "Nathan... why tonight? Why was the timing so urgent?"

Nathan walked over to the glass wall, staring out into the dark desert canyons.

"My former partner, Victor Vance, is attempting a hostile takeover of my port operations in San Diego," Nathan said quietly, his voice dark. "He tried to force a marriage alliance between his daughter and me to consolidate control. By marrying you tonight, I destroyed his leverage. I showed the council that I am unavailable, unshakeable, and bound to no one in their network."

He turned back to face me, his amber eyes reflecting the firelight.

"You gave me my freedom back tonight, Emily. In return, I will give you safety."

"And if Vance comes after me?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

May you like

Nathan walked up to me, stopping just inches away. He reached out, his thumb gently wiping a speck of dust from my collarbone. His touch sent a warm shiver through my spine.

"Let him try," Nathan whispered, his dark eyes burning with lethal promise. "He will find out what happens when you touch something that belongs to Nathan Brooks."
