Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm

The west parlor was suffocatingly quiet. I locked the heavy oak door from the inside, my hands shaking so violently that the brass key rattled against the keyhole. I pulled six-year-old Emma into my arms, sinking onto the velvet sofa and holding her as if my own body could shield her from the violent world outside.
Through the thick walls, I could hear the muted sounds of heavy footsteps, quiet commands spoken over radios, and the distinctive click of tactical firearms being loaded. Damiano Moretti was a man accustomed to absolute control. He ruled the New York underworld with an iron grip, a ruthless strategist who had spent ten years keeping rival families from tearing the city apart. Tonight was supposed to be his masterpiece—a historic peace treaty between the five major East Coast syndicates.
Instead, a bomb sat beneath his desk.
And the woman behind it was none other than Victoria Romano—the elegant heiress of the Chicago outfit, whom Damiano was scheduled to announce as his fiancée before the night ended.
"Mommy," Emma whispered, her small voice trembling against my shoulder. "Is the angry lady going to hurt us?"
"No, baby," I promised, kissing her forehead while holding back my own tears. "Mr. Moretti won't let anyone hurt us."
Ten agonizing minutes passed before three sharp knocks echoed against the door—two slow, one fast. It was Damiano’s private code. I scrambled to my feet and unlocked the door.
Damiano stood on the threshold. His tailored charcoal suit jacket was removed, revealing the black holster strapped across his broad chest. His dark hair was slightly tousled, and his dark eyes burned with an intense, deadly focus. Behind him stood two of his most trusted lieutenants, carrying heavy leather cases.
"Is it safe?" I breathed, stepping back as he entered the room.
"The device has been neutralized," Damiano replied, his deep voice calm and resonant. "A high-yield C4 charges set to detonate via remote signal five minutes into the summit meeting. It would have leveled the north wing of the estate."
I gasped, clutching my chest. "Who... who put it there?"
"Marco," Damiano said quietly, referring to his chief head of security—the man with the sad eyes Emma had mentioned. "Victoria bribed him three months ago. She planned to eliminate me and the other four dons in one stroke, framing the Philadelphia family and taking complete control of the Eastern territory."

Damiano turned his gaze down to Emma. The cold, lethal killer vanished, replaced by an expression of profound respect. He knelt on one knee before my six-year-old daughter.
"You saved my life tonight, little one," Damiano said softly, offering Emma a rare, genuine smile. "And you saved my men. A Moretti never forgets a debt."
