Chapter 7 - Whispers of the Heart

The news of our engagement exploded across global media headlines overnight.
“Billionaire Tech CEO Drake Morrison Engaged to Heroic Savior of His Children.”
“From Housekeeper to Matriarch: The Incredible True Story of Annie Vance.”
The public devoured the story. What had once been a dark, tragic tale of grief and corporate betrayal was transformed into a legendary romance—a testament to resilience, redemption, and the unbreakable power of love.
Back at Morrison Manor, planning for the wedding began in earnest. But neither Annie nor I wanted a massive, media-circus spectacle with thousands of corporate guests and politicians. We had had enough of the spotlight. We wanted something intimate, sacred, and deeply personal.
We decided to hold the ceremony on the estate's rear lawn, right by the quiet shores of the moonlit lake where we had shared our first real kiss.
Two weeks before the wedding, I took Annie on a quiet weekend trip to a secluded mountain lodge in upstate New York—just the four of us, including Jordan and Justin.
It was a crisp autumn afternoon. Gold and scarlet leaves drifted down from the canopy of ancient oak trees as we walked along a quiet forest trail. Jordan and Justin ran ahead of us, laughing joyfully, chasing fallen leaves, their small footfalls light and free of any remaining fear.
I walked with my arm wrapped securely around Annie’s waist, her head resting comfortably against my shoulder as we walked.
"Look at them," Annie whispered softly, watching the boys jump into a pile of leaves. "They aren't flinching anymore. They aren't looking behind them."
"They know they are safe, Annie," I said, kissing the top of her head. "Because of you."
Annie stopped in the middle of the trail, turning to face me. She reached up, gently smoothing the lapels of my dark wool coat. "Drake... there's something I need to tell you. Something I've been feeling for the past few weeks."
I looked down at her, slightly concerned by the solemn intensity in her eyes. "What is it, sweetheart? Are you having second thoughts?"
"No! God, no!" she said quickly, a soft laugh escaping her lips. "Never second thoughts about you, Drake. It's... something else."
She reached down, taking my right hand, and gently placed it over her lower abdomen, right over her stomach.
I froze. My heart skipped a violent, miraculous beat.
I looked from her hand on my stomach up to her face, searching her wide, glowing brown eyes. "Annie... are you...?"
Annie nodded, a radiant, tearful smile spreading across her face. "I went to the doctor three days ago while you were in meetings. We're having a baby, Drake."
The world seemed to stop spinning. The gentle rustle of the autumn leaves, the distant laughter of my boys, the cool mountain breeze—everything faded into a pure, crystalline silence.
"A baby?" I choked out, a profound wave of emotion washing over me, thick and overwhelming.
"A little girl," Annie whispered, her voice cracking with joy. "The doctor confirmed it yesterday."
A single, tear of pure, unfiltered happiness burned down my cheek. I scooped Annie up into my arms, spinning her around right there on the leaf-strewn forest path, holding her close as if she were the most precious treasure in the universe.
"A little girl," I breathed, setting her feet back on the ground, cupping her face in my hands, kissing her lips over and over again. "Thank you. Thank you, my love."
"Daddy! Annie!" Jordan came running back down the trail, Justin close behind him, both of them looking up at us with curious, wide eyes. "Why are you crying? Are you sad?"
I dropped to my knees, gathering both of my sons into a tight embrace, pulling Annie down beside us.
"No, big guy," I wiped my eyes, looking at my boys with a heart bursting with love. "Daddy is happier than he’s ever been in his whole life. And you guys are going to be big brothers."
Jordan’s eyes grew as big as saucers. "A big brother? Like... a baby?"
"A baby sister," Annie smiled, stroking Justin’s cheek. "How do you feel about that?"
Justin let out a loud cheer, throwing his small hands in the air. "I'm gonna teach her how to build Legos!"

"And I'm gonna protect her!" Jordan declared fiercely, puffing out his small five-year-old chest. "Nobody is ever gonna scare her!"
Annie and I locked eyes over our children's heads, shared tears mingling with shared laughter. The final missing piece of our shattered family had been found, fitting perfectly into place, restoring us completely.
