Chapter 4 - Uncovering the Audit Trail

The crisp morning sun broke over the snow-capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains on January 1st, 2026, casting a brilliant, golden light across the awakening city of Denver. I was officially discharged from the hospital at 8:00 AM, my baby resting safely, closely monitored, and completely healthy. Instead of returning to the scene of the trauma at the penthouse, I had Marcus arrange for me to check into a secure, heavily guarded executive suite downtown, accompanied by a rotating detail of professional private security.
By 10:00 AM, Marcus was sitting directly across from me at the polished glass conference table of my legal team's downtown office, slowly sliding a thick, leather-bound binder filled with complex forensic accounting spreadsheets toward me.
"I personally pulled every single transaction log from the past thirty-six months," Marcus said, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. His expression was grim, tight, and devoid of any professional cheer. "Claire, it is significantly worse than we initially calculated."
I opened the heavy folder. My eyes scanned the precise columns of numbers, tracing the massive, systematic outflow of capital from my pre-marital cloud-security stock options.
"Over two point four million dollars," I whispered, the numbers blurring momentarily before my eyes.
"Precisely," Marcus nodded solemnly. "Two point four million dollars funneled directly through an intricate web of shell companies registered under Grant Whitmore’s dormant consulting firm—a firm that hasn't executed a single day of legitimate commercial business in over five years. Furthermore, Ryan legally signed off on every single wire transfer using an electronic power of attorney he claimed you granted him back when you were recovering from minor surgery."
"I never granted him permanent financial power of attorney," I said, my voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register that made Marcus look up sharply. "I distinctly remember signing a temporary medical proxy form when I underwent outpatient surgery two years ago. He must have fraudulently slipped financial authorization clauses into the digital documents while I was under sedation."
"That constitutes wire fraud, forgery, identity theft, and grand larceny," Marcus said, sliding a second, even thicker legal document across the table. "Multiple federal offenses. They didn't just treat you like a convenient cash cow, Claire. They built an entire retirement empire on your back, while treating you like an abused servant inside your own home."
I looked down at the digital photograph of the angry burn on my cashmere sweater, then back up at the damning financial spreadsheets. The lingering grief I had felt over the sudden, violent death of my marriage vanished entirely, burned away by a searing, absolute clarity.
"They wanted to reduce me to absolute nothing," I said softly, standing up and walking over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the bustling city below. "They thought I'd stay quiet because I was pregnant, because I wanted to keep the family intact at any cost."

"What is your directive?" Marcus asked, his tone steady and supportive. "We can push for an immediate federal asset seizure. Every luxury vehicle, every high-end watch, every designer handbag they purchased with your capital can be legally reclaimed before their arraignment tomorrow morning."
"Seize everything down to the last dollar," I replied without a single second of hesitation. "Leave them with absolutely nothing except the clothes on their backs. Let's see how much they value 'family unity' when they have to pay for their own criminal defense."
