Chapter 6 - The Promise on the Hill

Spring returned to Chicago two years later, blooming with fresh white tulips and bright green grass across the estate gardens.
On a gentle hill overlooking the lake at the edge of our property stood a simple, elegant marble monument surrounded by white rose bushes. Engraved into the white stone were four simple words:
MADELINE ROSS VANCE BELOVED MOTHER, FOREVER LOVED
I walked up the stone path, holding a fresh bouquet of white roses. Beside me walked eleven-year-old Lily, holding a small framed photograph of her mother, and Hannah, who walked hand-in-hand with me, her finger wearing a sparkling diamond engagement ring.
We stopped before the marble stone.
Lily stepped forward, setting the bouquet of white roses gently at the base of the monument, beside a smaller arrangement of wild daisies she had picked herself.
"Hi, Mommy," Lily whispered softly, her voice clear and bright in the cool spring air. "Julian took me to my middle school orientation yesterday. I got accepted into the honors music program. And Hannah is helping me design my new room!"
She looked back at us, her eyes shining with pure, unburdened happiness.
I stepped up beside my daughter, resting my hand gently on her shoulder, looking down at Madeline’s name on the marble.
"I kept my promise, Madeline," I murmured in the silence of my heart. "Our daughter is safe. She is loved. And she will never know the dark world we fought so hard to escape."
Hannah stepped beside me, sliding her arms around my waist, resting her head against my shoulder.

"She would be so happy, Julian," Hannah whispered softly, watching Lily run down the hill toward the lake where Marcus was holding a model sailboat for her to test in the water.
"We gave her a future, Hannah," I said, leaning down to press a soft kiss against Hannah's lips. "You gave us both a future."
