Chapter 2 - The Trial in the Dark

The sub-basement of Mercy Heights Medical Center was a cavernous, concrete labyrinth of old boiler rooms and abandoned medical storage vaults. It was soundproof, isolated, and completely off the hospital’s security camera network—a place my organization had used for discreet meetings for over a decade.
Franklin Ward sat bound to a heavy wooden chair in the center of the room, illuminated by a single overhead bulb. Beside him, Celeste was restrained in an identical chair, her polished hair disheveled, tears of frustration smearing her expensive makeup.
Marcus stood by the heavy iron door, four armed enforcers standing in the shadows behind him.
The heavy door creaked open, and I walked in. I had discarded my hospital gown for a black suit handed to me by Marcus, though a thick medical brace still bound my broken ribs. Behind me walked Hannah Cole.
"Julian!" Celeste cried out the moment she saw me. "This is insane! You can't treat us like criminals! My father is a respected businessman!"
I walked slowly over to a metal table, setting the brass key and Madeline’s letter down under the harsh overhead light.
"Respected businessmen don't burn down warehouses with eight-year-old girls trapped inside, Celeste," I said coldly, leaning against the edge of the table.
Franklin sneered, his silver hair catching the dim light. "You think you're so smart, Julian. You think you're a king. You're nothing but a thug in an expensive suit. Madeline Ross was a liability from the day you met her."
My hand moved so fast it was a blur.
I grabbed a heavy steel medical tray from the table and slammed it across Franklin’s face. The metallic crunch echoed through the room, blood spurting instantly from Franklin’s broken nose. He groaned, his head snapping back.
"Father!" Celeste screamed.
I stepped closer to Franklin, grabbing him by his wet collar and pulling his face inches from mine. "You had her murdered."
"She was hiding the rightful Vance heir!" Franklin spat out, blood dripping down his chin. "If you knew you had a legitimate daughter, you would have named her your sole successor! The Ward family would have gotten nothing! Five years of alliance, billions in freight logistics, all swept away for a piano teacher's bastard!"
"She was not a bastard!" I roared, my voice shaking the concrete walls. "She was my daughter! And Madeline was my wife—in every way that mattered!"
Hannah stepped forward, holding a thick Manila folder she had pulled from the hospital's archived administrative server.
"Mr. Vance," Hannah said, her voice clear and precise. "Three days ago, before the fire at the East Dock warehouse, Franklin Ward’s transportation firm logged a private shipment from a rural farmhouse in upstate New York. The manifest listed 'specialized agricultural cargo,' but the GPS tracking matches the exact location where Madeline Ross's death was reported as a hit-and-run two weeks ago."
I looked down at Franklin, whose bloody eyes widened in shock as he realized Hannah had pulled the digital paper trail.
"You brought Madeline's body back to Chicago to confirm her identity," I whispered, the sickening truth pieces fitting together. "And when you found Lily, you locked her in the East Dock warehouse, set it on fire, and made sure the sprinklers were disabled. You intended to burn her alive so no one would ever know she existed."
"It was business, Julian!" Celeste sobbed, trying to shift her chair closer to me. "We did it for us! For our future! With our families united, we would have controlled the entire Midwest! You didn't even know the girl existed! Why throw away an empire for a child you've never known?!"
I turned my head slowly, looking at Celeste with a cold, terrifying disgust that made her choke on her words.
"Because she is my daughter," I said softly. "And you are nothing."
I looked over at Marcus. "Where is Salvatore?"
"Outside, Boss," Marcus replied. "He brought twenty men from the South Side docks. They've already seized Franklin’s primary logistics terminal on 47th Street."
"Good," I said. I looked back at Franklin and Celeste. "Your empire is over, Franklin. By morning, every freight contract, every port authority permit, and every bank account belonging to Ward Transportation will belong to the Vance syndicate."
"You can't do that!" Franklin gasped, wiping blood from his mouth. "The board will never approve it!"
"The board consists of five men," I said coldly. "Three of them work for me, and the other two are currently watching their bank accounts get emptied by my hackers. You have nothing left, Franklin. Except a trial."
"A trial?" Celeste whispered, hope flickering in her eyes. "You're... you're turning us over to the police?"
I smiled—a dark, terrifying smile that sent a shiver down Celeste’s spine.
"The police?" I laughed softly. "No, Celeste. You're not going to state prison. You're going to my private holding facility in northern Michigan. You will spend the rest of your natural lives working twelve-hour shifts in my logistics sorting yards, earning minimum wage to pay for Lily's trust fund."
"You're insane!" Franklin roared, struggling violently against his ropes. "You're a monster!"
May you like
"I was a monster when I let you into my life," I corrected, stepping back toward the door. "Now, I am simply a father protecting his child."
I looked at Hannah. "Nurse Cole, let's go. My daughter is waiting."
