Chapter 8 - The Gala of Reckoning

The night of the West Coast Leadership Gala arrived. The Beverly Hilton ballroom was filled with twinkling chandeliers, crystal champagne flutes, and the quiet hum of California's elite moving through the room.
I arrived wearing a floor-length emerald green silk gown with a low back, my hair styled in sleek, modern waves. Beside me were three members of my executive team, laughing and enjoying the atmosphere.
As I made my way toward the VIP section, a voice called out behind me.
"Claire?"
I stopped and turned around.
Standing near the bar area was a man in a black tuxedo. He was tall, with broad shoulders, silver-streaked dark hair, and sharp blue eyes that held a look of pleasant surprise.
It took me two seconds to recognize him.
"Julian?" I blinked, genuinely shocked.
Julian Thorne. He was a high-profile venture capitalist in California—and ironically, he was Vanessa’s ex-boyfriend. The man she had been crying about on the plane six months ago, claiming he was "emotionally unavailable."
Julian smiled, stepping forward with a glass of scotch in his hand. "I thought that was you. You look incredible, Claire."
"Thank you, Julian," I smiled, accepting his hand as he greeted me. "I didn't expect to see you here."
"I'm one of the event sponsors," Julian chuckled softly. "I heard you took over the West Coast division at Apex. Word travels fast in the corporate strategy world. Congratulations."
"Thank you. It’s been an incredible journey," I said.
Julian glanced around the room, then looked back at me with a soft, sincere expression. "I... I heard about what happened with Ethan. And Vanessa."
I held my head high, unbothered. "It was a necessary ending."
Julian let out a bitter, quiet laugh. "When Vanessa left me six months ago, she told me I was the selfish one. It wasn't until later that I realized she was constantly using Ethan to manipulate every relationship she was in. She tried to come back to me after Ethan’s company failed, you know."
"Did she?" I asked mildly.
"I blocked her number," Julian said, his eyes locking onto mine with intense clarity. "I have no tolerance for games or disrespect. Which is why I respected what you did on that plane. Walking away with your dignity intact... that took immense strength."
A subtle, warm spark ignited in my chest as I looked at Julian. He was everything Ethan was not: mature, self-aware, successful, and entirely unbothered by strong, ambitious women.
"Would you like to get a drink away from the noise, Claire?" Julian asked softly, offering his arm with genuine politeness. "I’d love to hear more about your work at Apex."
May you like
I looked at his offered arm, then looked up into his warm blue eyes.
"I'd like that very much, Julian," I said, placing my hand over his arm.
