Chapter 8 - The Rescue at Lake Como

When Clara regained consciousness ten minutes later, the nursery was filled with flashing red emergency lights, the smell of gunpowder, and the sounds of shouting men.
Julian Vance was kneeling beside her, his face bleeding from a deep cut on his forehead, his suit torn, his eyes filled with a terrifying, unhinged fury. A physician was trying to bandage his shoulder, but Vance pushed the doctor away with savage force.
"They took them," Vance growled, his voice thick with agony as he stared out at the dark lake. "They took Leo and Maya. They’re demanding my complete resignation and the destruction of all evidence against Aethelgard by dawn, or... or they drop the boat in the middle of the lake."
Marcus was frantically typing on a cracked tactical screen. "Sir, the boat is un-trackable. They used radar-absorbing paint and disabled the transponders. We have four helicopter units launching, but the fog rolling off the mountains makes visual search impossible. We don't know which abandoned villa along the fifty-mile coastline they took them to!"
"I know where they are," Clara said suddenly, struggling to her feet despite her dizziness.
Vance turned to her instantly, grabbing her hands. "Clara? What do you mean?"
"The man who grabbed Maya..." Clara gasped, clutching her throbbing head as her brilliant memory retrieved every detail of the terror. "He wore a black jacket with a gold crest on the sleeve—a crest with an anchor and three stars. And when he threw me, I smelled gasoline mixed with raw olive oil and woodsmoke."
Marcus’s eyes widened. "The old press house at Villa D’Este! It’s an abandoned olive oil refinery on the northern cliff—it has a gold-crest family emblem carved into the gates! It’s the only dock on the lake that still burns wood heaters for oil extraction!"
"Launch the strike team!" Vance yelled, tearing off his ruined suit jacket and grabbing a tactical vest from Marcus’s gear bag. "Now!"
"I'm coming with you," Clara declared, her eyes blazing with an terrifying focus that mirrored Vance’s own.
"Clara, no! It’s too dangerous!" Vance insisted.
"You don't know the layout of that old olive refinery, but I do!" Clara argued fiercely. "My mother took us to an identical historic refinery in England two years ago! I know where the drainage tunnels lead! I can get inside without triggering their door sensors and unlock the main gate for Marcus! If you storm the front with guns, they’ll hurt Maya and Leo before you get through the reinforced doors!"
Vance looked at the ten-year-old girl standing before him—blood on her forehead, bruised, yet standing like a warrior protecting her family. He saw himself in her. He saw the unstoppable drive of a parent who would burn the world to save their children.
"Marcus," Vance ordered, his voice echoing with absolute resolve. "Get her a tactical headset and a wet suit. We leave in two minutes."
Ten minutes later, Vance’s high-speed stealth boat sliced through the dense, freezing fog of Lake Como, cutting its engines a quarter-mile from the massive stone cliffs of the abandoned northern refinery.
While Vance and his tactical team prepared to assault the perimeter, Clara slipped into the icy water, swimming silently toward an ancient, stone drainage culvert that emptied beneath the cliff face. Slipping through the narrow, algae-slicked iron bars, she crawled through the dark, muddy pipe, ignoring the scrapes on her knees and the freezing water splashing her face.
She emerged inside the lower stone basement of the refinery. Guided by the faint sound of Maya’s distant crying, Clara crept up a flight of crumbling stone steps like a shadow.
In the central hall, two heavily armed mercenaries were standing guard near a high wooden table where baby Leo was crying in his carrier, while Maya was tied loosely to a chair, sobbing quietly.
Clara located the main electronic security panel near the side loading dock. Remembering Marcus’s quick instruction on the boat, she pulled a heavy copper emergency lever and cut the main junction cables with a pair of heavy wire cutters she had taken from the boat’s toolbox.
CLACK!
The heavy iron electronic locks on the refinery's main double doors instantly disengaged, failing open as a safety protocol.
Before the guards could react to the sudden security failure, the heavy wooden double doors were blown inward off their hinges by a explosive charge!
Julian Vance and his elite security team burst into the hall in a storm of tactical thunder. Flashbangs blinded the guards, followed by the swift, precise neutralization of the mercenaries before a single shot could be fired toward the children.
Vance didn't pause. He sprinted through the smoke, pulling baby Leo into his arms with one arm, while Marcus cut Maya free from the chair.
Clara ran out from the shadows. Maya threw herself into Clara’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably. "Clara! You came! You came for us!"
May you like
"I'll always come for you, Maya," Clara whispered, squeezing her little sister until she could hardly breathe.
Julian Vance dropped to his knees beside both girls, wrapping his massive arms around Clara, Maya, and Leo, holding all three of his children against his heart in the smoke-filled, ruinous hall as the dawn sun began to break over the crest of the mountains.
