Chapter 7 - Kidnapped

The victory in the courtroom sent shockwaves across the global financial and political landscape. Within forty-eight hours, Aethelgard Holdings collapsed under the weight of Interpol investigations, its board members arrested for corporate sabotage and murder conspiracy. Richard Croft was held without bail in a high-security prison in Rome, awaiting extradition to London to face life imprisonment.
With the legal storm seemingly over, Julian Vance brought Clara, Maya, and baby Leo to his private retreat at Lake Como—a secluded villa accessible only by a private winding road or by boat, nestled against the towering, dramatic cliffs of northern Italy.
For three days, Clara experienced a life she had never imagined possible. She slept in a room with a balcony overlooking crystal-blue waters. Maya spent her mornings laughing as she fed ducks along the private stone dock with Elena. Baby Leo, now completely healthy and thriving, babbled happily in Vance’s arms as the billionaire spent his hours working from a terrace instead of an office, devoted entirely to his newly expanded family.
"You look like you're waiting for the floor to fall out," Vance said softly one evening, joining Clara on the terrace as the sun set over the Alps.
Clara looked out at the water, sipping hot chocolate. "It just... it feels too good to be real. For three years, every time something good happened, Richard took it away."
"Richard is in a concrete cell, Clara," Vance assured her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "He’s never getting out. You built this safety with your courage. Learn to live in it."
But Clara’s hyper-vigilant instincts—honed by years of survival—refused to quiet down.
That night, at two o'clock in the morning, the violent reality Clara feared came crashing back.
The power to the entire Lake Como estate was abruptly cut. The backup generators, designed to kick in within three seconds, failed to respond—their fuel lines severed by professional saboteurs. The heavy security gates were compromised from the inside by an infiltrated staff member paid millions by the dying remnants of Aethelgard’s executive cartel, who were facing decades in prison and wanted ultimate revenge against Vance.
Before the villa’s manual alarm could sound, four heavily armed mercenaries dressed in tactical gear smashed through the glass doors of the lower terrace.
Flashing stun grenades exploded in the hallways, blinding and deafening the security team. Smoke filled the corridors as gunfire erupted. Marcus and Vance fought like cornered lions in the central hall, engaging the mercenaries in brutal hand-to-hand combat to defend the stairs.
"Get the children to the panic room!" Vance roared through the smoke, disarming a mercenary with a lethal martial arts strike.
Elena grabbed Maya and ran toward the reinforced basement door, but in the chaos, two masked men bypassed the main staircase by climbing the exterior balcony vines. They burst directly through the French doors of the nursery!
Clara, who had run into the room to save Leo, stood frozen as a mercenary grabbed baby Leo from his crib with one hand and snatched Maya from Elena’s arms as she tried to defend them.
"Clara!" Maya screamed, her terrified voice echoing through the tear-gas-filled hall.
May you like
"No!" Clara shrieked, launching herself at the mercenary’s leg, biting his arm with all her strength.
The mercenary swore, shoving Clara backward with violent force. Her head struck the edge of a heavy oak dresser, and world went black as the mercenaries carried Maya and baby Leo out into the night, disappearing into a waiting high-speed cigarette boat idling on the dark waters of Lake Como.
