Chapter 8 - The Awakening

When I returned to the penthouse at 1:30 AM, the apartment was warm, quiet, and filled with the soft scent of lavender.
I set the leather bag containing her mother’s ring on the dining room table and walked toward the nursery.
Hannah was sitting in the rocking chair, fast asleep, her head resting back against the velvet pillow. Leo was sleeping peacefully in his crib nearby.
I stepped quietly into the room, taking off my trench coat. I walked over to the rocking chair, picked up a soft wool blanket from the sofa, and gently draped it over Hannah’s shoulders.
As I pulled the blanket up, Hannah stirred, her eyelids fluttering open. She looked up at me, still half-asleep, her dark eyes filled with instant relief the moment she recognized my face.
"You're back," she whispered, her voice soft and thick with sleep.
"I’m back," I smiled gently. "And Marcus will never bother you again. Your mother’s ring is on the table."
Hannah stared at me, a silent wave of intense emotion passing over her face. Suddenly, she reached out, grabbed the lapels of my shirt, and pulled me down to her.
Her lips met mine in a soft, desperate, breathtaking kiss.
It wasn't a kiss born of lust or obligation. It was an explosion of two starving souls finding life in the middle of a desert. I wrapped my arms around her waist, pulling her up out of the chair, holding her against my chest as if she were the only real thing in an anchorless world.
When we finally broke apart, both of us gasping for air, her forehead rested against mine.
"I love him, Lorenzo," she whispered, her tears wetting my cheeks. "I love Leo... and I’m falling in love with you."

I brushed a strand of dark hair away from her face, looking deep into the eyes of the woman who had saved my family from the abyss.
"I loved my wife with all my heart, Hannah," I said softly, honestly. "And I thought when she died, my heart died with her. But you brought my son back to life... and you brought me back with him. I love you."
