Chapter 8 - The Clean Sweep

Three days later.

I sat in the corner office of Mercer-Hayes Logistics on the forty-fifth floor of our Manhattan skyscraper. The morning sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, illuminating the sprawling skyline of Central Park and the Hudson River.

On my massive glass desk sat a single cup of hot dark coffee, a stack of freshly executed legal documents, and a small metal plaque that had just been delivered from the engraver:

CLARA HAYES — CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Arthur Vance knocked gently on the doorframe before walking in, holding a sleek leather folder.

"Morning, CEO," Arthur smiled, sitting down in the leather chair across from me.

"Good morning, Arthur," I smiled, taking a sip of my coffee. "Give me the damage report."

Arthur opened the folder, pulling out a summary document. "Julian’s bail was denied by the federal magistrate yesterday due to extreme flight risk. He is currently being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Brooklyn pending trial."

"And his legal team?"

"They tried to offer a plea deal," Arthur chuckled. "They offered to forfeit all his remaining personal assets if we dropped the fetal homicide and federal grand larceny charges. I told them to take a hike. The prosecutor is pursuing the full twenty-five-year sentence."

"What about Chloe Dupont?"

"She surrendered the Cartier pendant, the SoHo apartment keys, and three designer bags to the federal marshals," Arthur reported. "She signed a full cooperation agreement with the District Attorney. She’ll be testifying against Julian in exchange for three years of probation."

I looked out over the city, feeling a profound, peaceful stillness inside my chest. The chaos was over. The cancer had been cut out of the company, and the financial bleeding had been stopped completely.

"And the European logistics deal?" I asked.

Arthur smiled broadly, sliding a golden pen across the desk toward me. "The Madrid consortium was so impressed by how swiftly you handled the executive transition and protected the company’s treasury that they signed the contract this morning. The $18.7 million is fully invested, and our European expansion launches next month."

I took the pen, signed my name smoothly at the bottom of the master contract, and leaned back in my chair.

"Get the PR team ready," I ordered calmly. "I want a press release issued by noon. Mercer-Hayes Logistics is officially shedding the past... and moving into the future."
