Chapter 3 - The Threat in the Dark

Julian stepped into the galley, pulling the thick privacy curtain tightly behind him. The small space immediately felt cramped, charged with the crackling energy of a impending storm.

"What the hell are you playing at, Clara?" he hissed under his breath, stepping close enough that I could smell the alcohol on his breath. "Talking to Chloe like that? Making absurd comments about corporate accounts?"

I stood my ground, my posture perfect, my hands clasped behind my back in standard Purser protocol.

"I’m performing my flight duties, Julian," I said calmly. "Ensuring our premium passengers are well-served."

"Cut the crap!" he snarled, taking a step closer, his eyes flashing with a dangerous fury. "You think you’re being clever wearing that uniform, playing the dutiful flight attendant while staring at me? You’re pathetic. You’ve been dragging your feet on our marriage for two years, bogged down in operational nonsense while I actually build this company!"

"Build it?" I echoed, raising an eyebrow with quiet amusement. "Is that what you call transferring $18.7 million to Aura Holdings in the Caymans?"

Julian froze. Every ounce of color drained from his face, leaving him looking sickly beneath the harsh galley lights. The arrogant mask slipped, revealing a desperate, cornered animal.

"How... how do you know about that?" he stammered, his voice dropping into a frantic whisper.

"I am the Chief Financial Officer, Julian," I reminded him softly. "Did you really think deleting the notification emails from my inbox was enough to hide a SWIFT transfer of that magnitude? Did you think I wouldn't notice the digital signature forgery using the old 2024 administrative seal?"

Julian stared at me, his chest heaving. Then, his expression hardened into something ugly. He reached out and grabbed my wrist, his grip tight, squeezing until the skin flared red.

"Listen to me very carefully, Clara," he whispered, leaning down to my ear. "You are not going to ruin this. That money is already moving. The deal in Madrid is done. When we land, I own fifty-one percent of the European logistics consortium, and there is nothing you can do about it. If you cause a scene on this plane, I will have you fired from this airline, and I will tie you up in court until you don't have a single cent left for legal fees."

I looked down at his hand gripping my wrist. Then I looked back up into his eyes, completely devoid of fear.

"You have ten seconds to release my arm, Julian," I said, my voice dead silent, "or I press the crew emergency alert button. The captain will land this aircraft at the nearest diversion airport in Iceland, and you will be removed in handcuffs for interference with a flight crew under international aviation law."

Julian stared at me, searching my face for any sign of a bluff. He found none.

Slowly, his fingers uncoiled. He stepped back, straightening his expensive jacket, trying to reassemble his shattered dignity.

"You're making a huge mistake, Clara," he muttered, his voice trembling with rage. "You have no power up here."

"We are at 30,000 feet, Julian," I replied, smoothing down the sleeve of my navy uniform. "Up here, I am the ultimate authority. Go back to your seat."
