Chapter 2 - Behind Locked Doors

The private elevator ride back up to our penthouse suite at the Dolder Grand was charged with a electricity so potent it felt like lightning trapped in a small box.
The moment the brass elevator doors slid shut, sealing us away from the bodyguards and hotel staff, Nolan turned to me.
The cold CEO mask vanished instantly.
He grabbed my briefcase, tossed it onto the velvet bench, and cupped my face in both of his hands. His thumb brushed over my cheekbone, his breathing shallow.
"Did he touch you?" Nolan demanded, his blue eyes wild with a fierce, protective dark fire. "When he leaned over you at the table, what did he say?"
"Nolan... I'm fine," I breathed, my hands instinctively resting against his broad chest. The heat of his body was intoxicating, erasing the terrifying memory of Julian's threat. "He just threatened my job."
"He doesn't have a job anymore," Nolan growled, leaning down until his lips brushed against my forehead. "I swear to God, Maya, if anyone in that room so much as looked at you wrong—"
"Nolan, listen to me," I interrupted gently, tilting my head up so he had to look into my eyes. "Julian didn't act alone. Graham Morrison was pushing too hard from New York. They knew the blizzard would force a rushed signature. They engineered the snowstorm delay to isolate you."
Nolan took a deep breath, resting his forehead against mine, exactly as he had done in bed hours earlier. The scent of cedarwood, rain, and his expensive cologne surrounded me.
"You saved me back there," he whispered, his hands sliding down to wrap firmly around my waist, pulling me flush against him. "If I had signed that, Northstar would have funneled forty-two million into an offshore account registered in Graham's name. They would have framed me for embezzlement by morning."
"I was just doing my job," I murmured, though my heart was beating a wild rhythm against his palm.
"Stop saying that," Nolan said softly. He captured my lower lip with his teeth, sending a shiver straight down my spine, before kissing me with a deep, desperate hunger that made my knees go weak.
This wasn't the hesitant kiss from the morning. This was a man claiming what he had starved for over three years.
I wound my fingers through his thick, dark hair, pulling him closer, kissing him back with all the repressed passion I had hidden behind polite professional smiles, color-coded schedules, and crisp formal suits.
When we finally separated, both of us were breathy.
"We can't do this here," I whispered, panic suddenly returning as my brain remembered reality. "The board... Julian... if anyone discovers we're involved, they'll claim I tampered with the contract because I'm sleeping with the CEO. They will ruin my professional credibility, Nolan. Everything I built—"
"I won't let them touch your reputation, Maya," Nolan swore, his voice iron-clad. "I would burn Rivers Meridian to the ground before I let anyone call you anything less than the brilliant, untouchable force you are."
He stepped back, taking a steadying breath, though his eyes never left mine.
"We need to get back to New York tonight," Nolan said, stepping toward his desk terminal. "My private jet is cleared for an emergency weather window at 4:00 AM. But before we board... I need you to break into Julian Vance's private ledger."
I pulled my tablet from my bag, a sharp, dangerous smile touching my lips.
"I already downloaded his encrypted local cache while he was arguing with you, Mr. Rivers."
May you like
Nolan stared at me for a beat, before letting out a low, breathless laugh that warmed the cold room better than any fireplace.
"God," Nolan murmured, looking at me like I was the only woman in the universe. "I am so hopelessly in love with you."
