Chapter 4 - The Public Execution

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in New York was packed with over five hundred high-profile journalists, corporate executives, and industry leaders.

It was the annual Transport & Logistics Industry Gala—the very event where, one year earlier, Evan had stood on stage, holding a 'CEO of the Year' trophy, claiming that his vision and hard work were the sole reasons for Mercer Logistics' success.

Tonight, Evan had somehow bought his way into the gallery. He wore his last clean designer suit, his face pale, dark circles under his eyes. He was desperate. He believed that if he could convince the major investors attending the gala to back him, he could fight James Vance in court and regain control of his company.

Beside him stood Diane, dressed in an ill-fitting dress she had kept from her better days, her hands shaking as she clutched a glass of cheap champagne.

"Evan, look," Diane whispered frantically, pointing toward the main stage. "Who is that?"

The stage lights dimmed.

A heavy, dramatic hush fell over the crowd as a spotlight illuminated the center podium.

The announcer's voice echoed through the massive speakers:

"Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome the newly appointed Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer of Vane Global Transport... Mrs. Claire Vane!"

The crowd gasped.

From the left side of the stage, a woman walked slowly toward the podium.

She wore an exquisite, custom-tailored emerald green silk gown that clung to her commanding figure. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant, royal updo. She walked with a slight, almost imperceptible silver cane—crafted from aerospace titanium—holding her head high with absolute, regal authority.

It was me.

Evan’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers, crashing onto the carpet. "Claire...?" he breathed, his voice barely a squeak.

Diane’s eyes widened in sheer horror. "She's... she's walking! She was supposed to be crippled!"

I stood behind the podium, looking out over the sea of high-society faces. My eyes swept over the room until they locked directly onto Evan and Diane standing near the back doors.

I didn't blink. I didn't smile.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," my voice echoed with absolute clarity through the state-of-the-art sound system. "Seven years ago, a company was born in a small, windowless office in Brooklyn. It was built on sweat, sleepless nights, and an unyielding commitment to excellence."

I paused, letting the silence stretch across the room.

"For seven years, the public was led to believe that this success was the work of one man," I continued, gesturing subtly toward the back of the room. "A man who stood on this very stage and accepted accolades while the true architect of the company remained in the shadows."

The giant LED screens behind me suddenly flickered to life.

Instead of displaying corporate financial charts, the screens began playing a video.

The room went dead silent.

It was the high-definition security footage from the marble foyer of my former home.

On forty-foot screens, five hundred of the most powerful people in the country watched in horror as Diane Mercer raised a wooden cane and brought it down violently against my leg. They heard the sickening CRACK of my bone breaking. They saw Richard kick me while I lay bleeding on the floor.

And then... the camera zoomed in on Evan’s face.

The screen caught every detail of his cold, arrogant, scornful smile as I screamed in agony.

Gasps of absolute horror and disgust erupted throughout the ballroom. Dozens of people turned around to stare directly at Evan and Diane.

"My God..." a billionaire investor seated near the front whispered. "They're monsters!"

"Look at him! He's smiling!" a prominent female CEO spat, pointing a finger at Evan.

I stood behind the podium, watching Evan’s face turn from pale to ghostly white. He tried to take a step back, but the crowd of elite socialites actively moved away from him, forming a wide circle of absolute isolation around him and his mother.

"That video," I said softly into the microphone, "was recorded twenty-four hours before Mercer Logistics was acquired by Vane Global. Today, I am proud to announce that Mercer Logistics no longer exists. It has been completely liquidated, its assets absorbed, and its toxic past purged."

May you like

I leaned forward, my voice cutting through the heavy atmosphere like a razor.

"And as for the criminals who believed they could break my body to steal my life's work... their trial begins tomorrow morning."
