Chapter 2 - The House of Cards

The silence inside the hospital room was absolute, broken only by the sharp, erratic gasps of Richard trying to drag his unconscious wife off the floor.
Evan backed away from Dr. Aris, his hands trembling as he pulled out his phone. "Video evidence? What are you talking about? There were no cameras! She didn't have her phone!"
Dr. Aris didn't answer him. He simply pressed a button on the wall intercom. "Security, please escort these three individuals off the premises. They are officially barred from all facilities within the St. Jude's healthcare network."
Within seconds, four heavy-set hospital security officers stepped into the room, their hands resting on their belts.
"Out," one of the guards commanded, grabbing Evan by the shoulder.
"Do you have any idea who I am?!" Evan shrieked, his polished, charming CEO persona completely disintegrating. "I am Evan Mercer! CEO of Mercer Logistics! I own this city!"
"You don't own anything, Mr. Mercer," Dr. Aris said quietly, turning his back on them. "Not anymore."
Twenty minutes later, inside the penthouse boardroom of Mercer Logistics, the emergency board meeting was already underway.
Evan rushed through the glass doors, his hair disheveled, his tie crooked. Richard followed behind him, looking like a man who had seen a ghost.
"Where is everyone?" Evan yelled, looking around the massive mahogany table.
Usually, the twelve board members—men and women who kissed the ground Evan walked on—would be sitting in their leather chairs, sipping expensive coffee. Today, eleven of the chairs were empty.
Sitting alone at the head of the table was James Vance, flanked by two federal agents in dark blue jackets stamped with the letters SEC.
"What is the meaning of this, Vance?" Evan demanded, slamming his fist onto the table. "This is a private corporate office! You have no right—"
"Sit down, Evan," James said, his voice smooth as silk. He didn't look up from his tablet.
"I am the CEO of this company!" Evan roared.
"Correction," James said, finally raising his eyes. "You were the CEO until 8:00 AM this morning. As legal counsel representing forty percent voting equity held by Claire Mercer, alongside thirty-five percent voting equity held by the primary institutional investment funds, a special emergency resolution was passed two hours ago."
James slid a thick stack of legal documents across the polished wood.
"You have been officially terminated from your position as Chief Executive Officer of Mercer Logistics, effective immediately," James declared. "Furthermore, the Board of Directors has filed a formal criminal complaint regarding the illegal diversion of three point eight million dollars into 'Apex Holding Ltd'—a shell company registered in your father's name."
Richard gasped, grabbing his chest. "That's... that's a lie! Claire forged those documents!"
"We have the IP logs, Richard," one of the SEC agents chimed in, leaning forward. "The wire transfers were initiated from your personal computer inside the Mercer residence. At 2:14 AM on the fourteenth of last month. Using your private security key."
Evan stared at his father, his eyes widening in pure horror. "Dad... what did you do?"
"I did it for us!" Richard stammered, his face turning an unhealthy shade of purple. "I did it to protect the family! She was going to cut us out!"
"She didn't cut you out, Richard," James corrected, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "Claire built this entire infrastructure. She let Evan take the credit because she loved him. She protected this family from its own incompetence for seven years. But you mistook her grace for weakness. And now... the bill has come due."
Just then, Evan's phone buzzed violently on the table.
He looked down at the screen. It was an automated alert from his personal banking application.
ALERT: Your primary asset accounts have been frozen pursuant to Federal Court Order #8821-B.
A second notification flashed:
ALERT: Mortgage foreclosure proceedings initiated on 144 Marble Arch Way.
The house. The four-million-dollar villa where my leg had been broken three days earlier. The house I had paid for in full using my inheritance.
Evan fell back into a leather chair, his breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps. The illusion of his power, his wealth, his control—all of it was dissolving like salt in water.
"Where is she, James?" Evan begged, his voice cracking. "Please... let me talk to her! I can explain! It was a mistake! My parents forced me!"

James looked down at Evan with profound contempt.
"Claire is somewhere you will never be able to reach her, Evan," James said softly. "In a world where cowards don't exist."
