Chapter 9 - A New Light

Inside the quiet, wood-paneled study, sunlight filtered through the large stained-glass windows, illuminating the heavy oak desk where Mia’s original crayon drawing remained framed in silver.

Elena closed the door behind them, her heart racing with excitement.

"Elena, what is it?" Adrian asked, growing genuinely curious.

Elena pulled a small, elegant white box tied with a gold ribbon from her handbag and handed it to him.

Adrian took the box, looking at her quizzically. He untied the ribbon and lifted the lid.

Inside rested a small, white plastic stick displaying two clear, bold blue lines, alongside a pair of tiny, knitted black baby booties.

Adrian froze.

The man who had faced down rival syndicates, federal prosecutors, and armed assassins without ever showing a single trace of shock stood completely motionless, staring down at the tiny white box in his hands.

His chest rose and fell heavily. His hands—hands that had ruled a crime empire—actually trembled slightly.

"Elena..." Adrian whispered, his voice cracking with an intense, overwhelming emotion. "Is this... are you..."

Elena stepped close, wrapping her arms around his waist, looking up into his tear-filled eyes with unbounded love.

"We're going to have a baby, Adrian," Elena smiled through her tears. "Mia is going to be a big sister."

Adrian let out a breathless, joyful laugh. He wrapped his arms around her, lifting her off her feet and spinning her around in the center of the quiet study.

"A baby..." Adrian breathed, holding her tight, burying his face in her neck. "A family... a real family."

"You gave us a life, Adrian," Elena whispered into his ear. "Now we're giving you a future."

When they walked back out onto the terrace twenty minutes later, Mia ran up the stairs, holding a giant blue balloon.

"Mommy! Mr. Coffee! Look how high my balloon goes!" Mia cheered.

Adrian dropped to his knees, taking Mia into his arms, pulling both her and Elena into a tight, warm embrace.

"Mia, sweetheart," Adrian said gently, looking into her bright brown eyes. "How would you feel about having a little brother or sister to play with in the treehouse?"

Mia’s eyes widened to the size of saucers. "A baby?! A REAL baby?!"

"A real baby," Elena nodded happily.

Mia squealed in absolute delight, throwing her arms around Adrian’s neck, hugging him with all the tiny strength in her small body. "This is the best day EVER!"
