Chapter 1 - The Veins of Betrayal

The heavy silence inside the high-tech security office of the Valenti estate was thicker than the fog rolling in off the Long Island Sound.
Renata Voss stood before the wall of glowing monitors, her posture as rigid as iron. For nearly forty years, she had been the backbone of this estate. She knew every secret passage, every family heirloom, every political alliance Adrian’s late father had forged. To the staff, she was an unstoppable force. To Adrian, she had been a lingering shadow of his childhood—the woman who had wiped his nose when he was five, but also the woman who never let him forget the terrifying bloodline he inherited.
"Why, Renata?" Adrian asked again, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register that made even the armed guards near the door shift uncomfortably.
Renata didn't tremble. She slowly straightened her tailored black collar, her cold blue eyes locking onto Adrian with a sudden, vicious fire that surprised everyone in the room.
"Because she doesn't belong here, Adrian," Renata hissed, gesturing toward the monitor where Elena’s humble profile remained paused. "Look at her! A widowed maid with a fragile, useless child! You let her wander into this house eight months ago out of some misplaced sense of charity. And since the day she arrived, you’ve changed!"
Adrian didn't blink. "I don't change for anyone, Renata. You know that."
"Don't lie to yourself!" Renata spat, stepping closer, ignoring the low growl rumbling deep in Rex’s chest. "For thirteen years, since your father was buried, you ran the Valenti syndicate like a machine of pure, unfeeling steel. The Moretti family respected you. The Commission feared you. But lately? You refuse to expand the dock operations. You turn down lucrative smuggling contracts. And now, I catch you standing in the rain, carrying a servant's child in your arms!"
"My business decisions are made in executive boardrooms, not behind Maple trees," Adrian said cold, dark eyes narrowing. "Framing an innocent woman for grand larceny isn't loyalty to my father’s legacy, Renata. It’s treason against me."
"I did it to save this family!" Renata yelled, her composure finally breaking into ugly, jagged pieces. "If a maid can soft-hearted you into softness, you will be dead before the winter is over! The Moretti syndicate is watching us, Adrian! They smell blood! They know you're softening! I put that watch in her locker to force you to clear out the distraction before it gets us all killed!"
In the grand hallway outside, Elena stood holding four-year-old Mia against her chest. The security office door was slightly ajar, and Renata’s shrill, angry words echoed clearly across the marble floor.
Mia buried her tiny face into Elena's neck, her small shoulders shaking. "Mommy... is the loud lady mad at us?"
Elena squeezed her daughter tighter, tears burning her eyes. She was just a woman trying to earn a honest living after her husband’s tragic death in a construction accident two years ago. She had taken the housekeeping job at the Valenti estate because the pay was fair and the security was absolute. She had never asked for Adrian’s attention. She had lived in constant fear of the shadowy, powerful man who ruled this estate with an iron fist.
Yet, as she looked toward the open office door, she saw Adrian step out into the corridor.
He didn't look like a ruthless crime lord in that moment. He looked like an absolute pillar of absolute protection.
"Marcus," Adrian called out softly to his head of security.
"Yes, Boss?"
"Escort Mrs. Voss off my property," Adrian ordered, taking off his gold signet ring and placing it in his pocket—a gesture that meant an officer had been stripped of all authority. "She is stripped of her pension, her access, and her name within the Valenti organization. If she sets foot on Long Island again, treat her as an enemy of the house."
Renata’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief as two large security guards grabbed her arms. "You're making a catastrophic mistake, Adrian! My family served yours for three generations! You can't toss me aside for a maid and a street rat!"
"You tossed yourself aside the moment you lied to my face," Adrian said coldly.
As Renata was marched away down the grand staircase, her bitter curses fading into the cavernous hall, Adrian turned his attention back to Elena and Mia.
Rex padded over, resting his broad head gently against Mia’s small pink sneakers. Mia let out a soft hiccup, reaching down with one small hand to stroke the dog's soft ear.
Adrian walked up to Elena. Up close, he was towering, carrying an undeniable aura of absolute power, but his eyes held no malice.
"Mrs. Brooks," Adrian said, his tone measured. "You and your daughter have been deeply wronged under my roof. The maid’s quarters in the east wing are no longer appropriate for you."
Elena gasped, her heart dropping into her stomach. "Mr. Valenti, please... I don't have anywhere else to go. I swear I'll work twice as hard—"
"You misunderstand me," Adrian interrupted smoothly. "You are no longer a maid here. As of today, you are the house administrator. You will occupy the guest suite on the second floor, with a full salary increase, private security, and proper schooling arranged for Mia."
Elena stared at him, completely speechless. "I... I can't accept that, sir. I'm just a cleaner."
May you like
Adrian looked down at Mia, who was looking up at him with bright, innocent eyes, still holding her one-eyed stuffed rabbit.
"You are the mother of a very brave little girl who knows how to tell the truth," Adrian said softly, reaching out to gently adjust Mia’s small coat. "And in my world, loyalty to the truth is worth more than gold."
