Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

In Manhattan, Daniel was in the middle of a live television interview with CNBC when his personal phone vibrated violently against his hip.

He pulled it out live on air, ignoring the news anchor's question.

ALERT: AMY’S PERIMETER BREACHED. PAPARAZZI CONVERGING. MEDICAL EMERGENCY.

Daniel stood up, ripping the microphone off his silk tie, tossing it onto the news desk, and walking off the set live on national television.

"Daniel!" his publicist screamed, chasing him down the corridor. "Where are you going?! The market—"

"Cancel everything," Daniel barked at Eli, who was waiting at the elevator with six security guards. "Get the jet. NOW."

Ten minutes later, Daniel sat in the back of an armored SUV speeding toward Teterboro Airport. He called his legal team.

"I want Vanessa Vance ruined," Daniel commanded, his voice cold enough to freeze hell. "File a fifty-million-dollar defamation lawsuit against Vance Group by four o'clock. Buy out the parent company of Manhattan Exposed by five o'clock and fire every editor involved. If any press photographer touches my wife’s property in Maine, I want them arrested for felony trespass before sunset."

"Consider it done, Mr. Harrison," his chief counsel replied.

Two hours later, Daniel’s private Gulfstream jet touched down on a tiny private runway in Bangor, Maine. A high-speed security escort tore through the coastal highways, escorting Daniel directly to the Willow Cove clinic.

When Daniel burst through the clinic doors, the lobby was filled with state troopers holding off five arrested paparazzi photographers.

Margaret Harrison was already in the waiting room, her face pale with worry.

"Mother!" Daniel rushed over. "Is she okay? Where is she?!"

"She went into premature labor from the stress, Daniel," Margaret said, holding her son’s arm. "The doctors managed to stall the contractions, but her blood pressure is dangerously high. She's asking for you."

Daniel didn't wait. He pushed through the double doors into the private delivery suite.

The room was quiet, dim, dominated by the rhythmic, steady beep... beep... beep of a fetal heart monitor.

Amy lay on the hospital bed, an IV line in her hand, an oxygen tube resting under her nose. She looked tiny, exhausted, her face pale against the white sheets.

When the door opened, she turned her head slowly.

"Daniel," she whispered, her voice barely a breath.

Daniel rushed to the bedside, dropping to his knees, taking her cold, trembling hand in both of his, pressing it against his lips, his forehead resting on the mattress.

"I'm here," he sobbed. "I'm so sorry, Amy. I thought I protected you. I'm so sorry..."

Amy squeezed his hand weakly, her thumb wiping a tear from his cheek.

"You handled the press," she murmured, pointing to the small TV in the corner showing live news of Vance Group’s stock crashing as Daniel’s lawyers dismantled their company. "Your mother told me what you did."

"I don't care about the company, Amy," Daniel choked out, looking up into her soft brown eyes. "I only care about you. You and our baby."

Amy looked at him deeply. In his eyes, she saw no trace of the vanity, the arrogance, or the ambition that had once consumed him. She saw only a man who had walked through hell, burned his own empire, and stood ready to shield her with his own body.

"Daniel," Amy whispered, taking a deep, shuddering breath. "My contractions stopped twenty minutes ago."

"Thank God," Daniel breathed, kissing her palm.

"The doctor says the baby is stable," Amy continued, a soft, fragile smile returning to her lips. "He says... he says it's a boy."

Daniel froze, looking up at her in utter awe. "A boy?"

"A boy," Amy nodded, tears spilling over her lashes. "And... I think he needs his father."

Daniel stared at her, his heart swelling so hard he felt his ribs would break. "Amy... are you... are you giving me a chance?"

Amy reached out with her other hand, touching the rough beard on his jawline.

May you like

"I chose peace six months ago, Daniel," Amy said softly. "And I realized... peace isn't running away from the storm. Peace is finding the man who will stand in the storm with you and hold the door shut."

Daniel leaned up, pressing his forehead gently against hers, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated joy as the fetal monitor chimed a steady, beautiful beat in the quiet room.
