Chapter 8 - The Shadows of Manhattan

The road back was not clean.

Daniel returned to Manhattan three days later, but he was a changed man. He no longer wore custom designer suits; he wore simple charcoal coats. He didn't return to the empty penthouse; he moved into a quiet brownstone near Central Park, filling it with baby furniture, crib designs, and medical journals on high-risk pregnancies.

He didn't force himself back into Amy’s life in Maine. Instead, he built an invisible wall of protection around her.

He assigned Eli’s top security team to live incognito in Willow Cove, ensuring no press or paparazzi ever discovered her sanctuary. He hired the top obstetrician in New England to open a small, state-of-the-art clinic ten minutes from her cottage, funding it anonymously so Amy could receive world-class care without feeling compromised.

Every Sunday evening at 8:00 PM, Daniel’s phone would ring once.

It was a landline from the Willow Cove general store. He would answer, and for twenty minutes, Amy would speak to him. They didn't talk about romance. They talked about her blood pressure, the baby’s heartbeat, her nursery paint choices, and his progress at Harrison Capital.

It was a fragile, distant bridge—built on trust that was being rebuilt brick by single brick.

Then, the snakes of Manhattan struck back.

In early March, when Amy was thirty-two weeks pregnant, Vanessa Vance decided that if she couldn't have Daniel Harrison, she would destroy him.

A tabloid magazine called Manhattan Exposed published a devastating, front-page tear-down article: THE SECRET PREGNANCY OF AMY HARRISON: IS THE CEO’S FORGOTTEN WIFE HIDING A BASTARD IN MAINE?

The article contained leaked medical documents, private photos of Amy’s cottage, and disgusting, vicious quotes from anonymous sources claiming that Amy had fled New York because the child wasn't Daniel’s.

It was a hit piece designed by Vanessa to destroy Amy’s reputation and push Harrison Capital stock into an inescapable tailspin.

Within two hours of the magazine hitting the stands, three news helicopters were hovering over Willow Cove, and dozens of paparazzi were swarming the quiet wooden cottage, banging on Amy’s windows, flashing high-powered lenses through her curtains.

Inside the cottage, Amy sat on her living room floor, hyperventilating, clutching her stomach as sharp, agonizing cramps began to tear through her lower abdomen.

"Daniel..." she gasped, reaching for her phone on the table. "Daniel, help me..."
