Chapter 9 - The Lumis Gala Returned

One year later.
The grand ballroom of the Lumis Hotel was once again lit by nine hundred sparkling crystal chandeliers. Nine hundred guests filled the plush tables, their diamonds and tuxedos reflecting the opulent luxury of the city’s premier charity event.
However, the event was completely unrecognizable from the previous year.
The high stage was flanked by two large, high-definition digital screens displaying real-time Sign Language interpreters. The seating arrangements were no longer organized by corporate hierarchy or political influence; doctors, pediatric nurses, young patients, and their families sat side-by-side with city leaders.
At Table Seven, near the curve of the dance floor, sat Lily Rock. She wore an emerald green dress that matched her glowing smile. Beside her sat Aubrey and three other young children from the Institute, their hands moving through the air in joyful, energetic conversation.
Sitting right next to Lily was Daniel Rock. He no longer wore the cold, distant expression of a grieving corporate titan. He was fully engaged, laughing as he signed back to the children, his hand movements smooth, confident, and natural.
Across the table sat Dr. Sloan Vance. She wore a stunning midnight-blue gown, her dark hair pinned up softly, her eyes shining as she watched Daniel interact with the kids.
The master of ceremonies stepped up to the podium. "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the co-founders of the Rock-Vance Pediatric Institute, Mr. Daniel Rock and Dr. Sloan Vance!"
The ballroom broke into thunderous applause.
Daniel stood up, taking Sloan’s hand in his. Together, they walked up the steps onto the main stage.
Daniel stepped up to the microphone. He looked out over the sea of nine hundred people, then down at Table Seven, where Lily was watching him with absolute pride.
Daniel did not speak immediately. Instead, he lifted his hands toward the audience and signed clearly: Welcome to a room where everyone is heard.
The digital screens broadcast the message instantly. The crowd cheered even louder.
Daniel then spoke into the microphone, his voice resonant and filled with genuine warmth. "One year ago, I walked into this room believing that my wealth was the only thing I had to offer the world. I believed that silence was a tragedy to be hidden away. But a quiet pediatrician taught me that the loudest room in the city can be completely deaf to what truly matters, and that love doesn't need a microphone—it just needs us to stoop down to eye level."
He turned to look at Sloan, taking her hand in both of his. "Sloan showed me how to listen to my niece. She healed my family. And tonight, she has made this city a place where no child will ever have to sit alone in the dark again."
Daniel knelt down right there on the main stage—not out of necessity, but out of absolute, public devotion—and pulled a small, elegant velvet box from his jacket pocket.
He opened it to reveal a simple, breathtaking ring set with a clear, polished diamond alongside a tiny, shimmering fragment of meteor stone.
Looking up at Sloan, Daniel signed with his right hand while holding the box with his left: Will you walk with us under the stars forever?

Sloan’s eyes filled with soft, radiant tears. She didn't hesitate for a single second. She dropped to her knees beside him on the stage, wrapped her arms around his neck, and signed right against his shoulder: Yes. Always.
The ballroom exploded into a standing ovation. Down at Table Seven, Lily stood on her chair, clapping her hands wildly, her face beaming with pure, unadulterated joy.
