Chapter 10 - Under the Starlit Canopy

Six months after the gala, summer arrived in full bloom across the rolling hills of Kinsey Park.

The estate grounds had been transformed into a magical outdoor sanctuary for the wedding of Daniel Rock and Dr. Sloan Vance. White silk ribbons fluttered gently in the warm breeze, and strings of warm fairy lights hung beneath the high canopy of the pine trees, creating the illusion of a vast, glowing galaxy floating just above the grass.

Over two hundred guests gathered on the lawn—nurses from Lincoln Memorial, clinical staff from the Institute, corporate partners who had embraced the new foundation, and families whose children had been saved by Sloan’s work.

At the front of the aisle stood Daniel, looking exceptionally handsome in a dark tuxedo, his eyes fixed on the wooden path leading from the main house.

The music shifted to a soft, acoustic melody played by a solo cellist.

Walking down the aisle first were Lily and Aubrey, acting as the maid of honor and flower girl. Lily wore a delicate rose-gold dress, carrying a small woven basket filled with white petals. As she walked, she scattered the petals with graceful, rhythmic movements, her face practically glowing with happiness.

Then came Sloan.

She was breathtaking. Her gown was an elegant creation of ivory silk with subtle silver embroidery that caught the sunlight like cosmic dust. She carried a simple bouquet of white roses and lavender.

When Sloan reached the end of the aisle, Daniel stepped forward and took her hands. His eyes were shining with profound, overwhelming emotion.

"You are beautiful, Sloan," Daniel whispered softly.

"And you are completely mine," Sloan replied, her warm smile radiant.

The ceremony was conducted simultaneously in spoken English and fluent Sign Language by a chaplain from the deaf community. Every guest, whether hearing or deaf, was fully immersed in the sacred union unfolding before them.

When it came time for the exchange of vows, Daniel turned to face Sloan fully. He set his microphone aside and raised his hands, choosing to deliver his vows entirely in Sign Language so that Lily, sitting in the front row, could read every single word directly from his heart.

Sloan, Daniel signed, his movements steady, precise, and overflowing with deep love. Two years ago, I was lost in a cold, silent room. You walked into my life, dropped to your knees, and taught me that love isn't something we speak—it is something we show. You saved my niece, you restored my soul, and you gave my life a purpose beyond anything I ever imagined. I promise to stand by you, to listen to you, to love you through every storm and under every star, for all the days of my life.

Sloan wiped a soft tear from her cheek, raising her hands to sign back: Daniel, you opened your heart to a world you didn't understand, simply because you loved your family. You showed me that behind the corporate titan was a man of immense courage, tenderness, and grace. I promise to walk beside you, to build our home with laughter, music, and quiet understanding, and to hold your hand forever.

The chaplain smiled warmly, stepping forward. "By the authority vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife!"

Daniel pulled Sloan close, pressing his lips to hers in a deep, passionate kiss as the guests erupted into joyful cheers. Down in the front row, Lily raised both her hands high into the air, waving them back and forth in the traditional deaf applause, her face lit with pure delight.

Later that evening, as the stars filled the clear night sky, the celebration moved to the outdoor terrace. Laughter, music, and signed conversations filled the air as guests danced and celebrated beneath the fairy lights.

Daniel and Sloan walked away from the crowd, holding hands, stepping onto a quiet knoll overlooking the pine forest.

Lily ran up behind them, holding her small brass telescope under one arm. She set it up on its tripod, pointing it toward the brilliant streak of the Milky Way stretching across the heavens.

Daniel dropped to one knee on the soft grass beside his niece, putting one arm around her shoulder and his other arm around Sloan’s waist.

Lily looked through the eyepiece, then turned to her uncle and aunt with a beaming smile. She signed rapidly: Look! The cosmic dust is everywhere tonight!

Daniel looked up at his wife, then down at his niece, his heart fuller than it had ever been in his entire life.

He raised his hand and signed back to Lily, his message clear, complete, and filled with everlasting love: The stars are beautiful, Lily. But our family is the brightest thing in the universe.

Sloan leaned down, kissing Daniel softly on the cheek, then pulled Lily into a warm, gentle hug. Together, under the endless canopy of the night sky, they stood united in a love that needed no words to be completely, perfectly heard.
