Chapter 9 - Healing the Scars

Spring arrived in Lake Forest, melting the ice off Lake Michigan and filling the estate’s gardens with vibrant green life. The Vale family was no longer the subject of terrifying mafia whispers; with Victor’s entire network dismantled and handed over to federal authorities, Dominic had successfully legitimized the family’s vast assets, transitioning into global shipping and real estate.

The atmosphere in the mansion had completely transformed. The dark surveillance room upstairs had been dismantled. Dominic had removed the cameras from the east wing, burning the tapes and restoring absolute privacy to his home.

Julian’s book, titled The Silence Between Words, had been accepted by a major publishing house in New York. The dedication page read simple and clear: To Grace, who listened when I had no voice.

Julian was now walking with only the aid of a cane, spending his mornings in the sunlit conservatory, writing his second novel.

One afternoon, Grace stood in the kitchen of the east wing, packing her small cloth bag. Her contract as the temporary housekeeper was officially over. She had cleaned the last room, organized the last bookshelf, and folded the last towel.

She walked out to the main courtyard, where a car was waiting for her.

Julian met her near the fountain, leaning on his mahogany cane. He pulled her into a warm, fierce embrace. "You don't have to leave, Grace," he said softly. "This house is yours for as long as you want it."

"You don't need a housekeeper anymore, Julian," Grace smiled, brushing a tear from her eye. "You need an agent. And besides, your brother has been standing by that window for twenty minutes trying to look mysterious."

Julian chuckled, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. "Go to him. He’s much worse at writing his feelings down than I am."
