Chapter 6 - The Strategy of Silence

Armed with Julian’s financial roadmap, Dominic began dismantling Victor’s empire brick by brick. He leaked encrypted ledgers to the federal prosecutors, seized control of Victor’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, and ambushed three of Victor’s illegal shipments at the Chicago docks.
The syndicate was shifting. Lieutenants who had once leaned toward Victor were now crawling back to Dominic, terrified by the ruthless precision with which the Don was suddenly operating. None of them knew that the mind behind the masterstrokes belonged to the twin brother they thought was a brain-dead invalid.
However, as the war outside intensified, a new dynamic was forming inside the Lake Forest estate.
Dominic found himself visiting the east wing not out of paranoia, but out of a desire to be near Grace. He watched her work, amazed by how she brought warmth to a house that had been cold for a decade. She didn't bow to his mafia persona; she scolded him when he skipped meals, forced him to drink water instead of endless espresso, and argued with him over plot points in Julian’s book.
One evening, as heavy rain replaced the snow, Dominic found Grace sitting on the window seat in the main drawing room, looking out at the dark waters of Lake Michigan.
"You should be resting," Dominic said gently, sitting beside her. He had shed his tailored suit jacket, wearing only a black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the intricate mafia tattoos lining his forearms.
"I can't sleep when the house is this quiet," Grace admitted, turning to look at him. "It feels like the calm before a storm."
"Victor is desperate," Dominic said, his voice dropping to a soft murmur. "He has nothing left except a final, reckless move. I promise you, Grace, once this is over, you will be safe. I’ll make sure you’re taken care of for the rest of your life."
Grace laughed quietly, a sweet, rich sound that made Dominic’s chest tighten. "I don't want to be 'taken care of,' Dominic. I like my work. I like being useful."
Dominic looked at her—really looked at her. He saw the strength in her shoulders, the warmth in her dark eyes, and the quiet beauty that didn't depend on the shallow standards of the high-society women he usually encountered.
"You aren't just useful, Grace," Dominic said, his hand reaching out to gently touch her jawline, his thumb brushing over her cheekbone. "You brought my brother back to life. And... you made me remember what it feels like to be human."
Grace’s breath hitched. The air between them grew electric, heavy with unspoken tension. Before either of them could bridge the small gap between them, Dominic’s phone buzzed aggressively.

He answered it, his expression instantly hardening. "Speak."
"Boss," Calvin’s panicked voice came over the speaker. "Victor has just hijacked the medical transport bringing Julian’s specialized therapy equipment. He’s taken the driver hostage, and he’s demanding a trade. You for the driver... at the old grain silos by the river."
