Chapter 9 - The Grand Finale at the Opera

The Lyric Opera House of Chicago was a masterpiece of Art Deco architecture, its massive gilded ceilings and velvet-curtained balconies exuding an aura of old-world grandeur. Tonight, the grand hall was dark, rented out under a private corporate umbrella for an exclusive, closed-door charity gala—the perfect cover for a high-stakes trap.
Emma stood on the mezzanine balcony, wearing an exquisite midnight-blue silk evening gown that Eric had personally selected for her. Diamond earrings glinted beneath her pinned-up hair. She looked like royalty, a complete transformation from the exhausted waitress who had been clearing tables twenty-four hours ago.
In her silver evening clutch was a high-capacity encrypted flash drive containing the complete, translated ledger.
Below her in the main foyer, wealthy patrons in tuxedos and gowns mingled over champagne, unaware that twenty hidden snipers were posted in the upper catwalks, and every exit was monitored by Eric’s private security force.
In the control room high above the stage, Eric stood before a bank of security monitors, earpiece fitted, watching every camera angle.
"Target has entered the perimeter," Dominick’s voice came through the earpiece. He was sitting in a wheelchair in the lower monitoring van, heavily bandaged but alive and sharp. "Agent Marcus Vance just came through the front doors. He brought six heavily armed operatives in tuxedos. They're carrying suppressed sidearms."
"Copy that," Eric replied. "Let him reach the balcony."
On the balcony, Emma felt her pulse racing as she saw a tall, sharp-featured man in a black tuxedo ascend the grand marble staircase. His eyes were cold, calculating, and fixated entirely on her.
"Miss Hayes," Agent Marcus Vance said, stopping ten feet away. His hand rested casually inside his tuxedo jacket. "You're a very difficult person to track down."
"Agent Vance," Emma said, keeping her voice steady and refined. "Or should I call you 'The Bishop'?"
Vance chuckled softly, a dry, humorless sound. "Names are irrelevant. What matters is what’s inside that clutch."
"Ten million dollars in bearer bonds, deposited into an untraceable Swiss account," Emma stated her terms smoothly. "And full immunity for my grandfather and myself. You give me the transfer confirmation, and the flash drive is yours."
Vance took two steps closer, his smile fading into a cold sneer. "You don't have leverage here, Emma. Your grandfather is an old ghost, and Eric Moretti is about to be arrested by thirty federal agents waiting outside this building. You hand me that drive now, or you don't walk out of this opera house."
Emma didn't flinch. She raised her glass of champagne, taking a slow sip.
"You forgot one thing, Agent Vance," Emma said calmly.
Vance frowned. "What?"
"This isn't your opera house," she replied. "It’s Eric’s."
Emma dropped her champagne glass.
The heavy crystal glass shattered against the marble floor with a sharp CLINK.
Instantly, the massive gilded chandeliers overhead plunged into total darkness.
Screams erupted from the foyer below as emergency strobe lights flashed on, blinding Vance and his operatives.
"STRIKE!" Eric’s voice roared through the comms.
Shadows dropped from the high balconies like birds of prey. Eric’s men, equipped with night-vision goggles, moved with surgical precision. Within seconds, suppressed gunshots echoed—PFFT! PFFT! PFFT!—taking down Vance’s operatives before they could even draw their weapons.
Vance lunged forward in the dark, grabbing for Emma’s throat, but a heavy hand caught his wrist in mid-air.
The strobe light flashed, illuminating Eric Moretti’s face—cold, relentless, and deadly.
Eric drove his fist into Vance’s stomach, throwing the rogue federal agent over the velvet railing. Vance crashed onto the lower mezzanine landing fifteen feet below with a sickening thud, his gun skittering across the polished floor.
Eric drew his sidearm, walking slowly down the marble steps toward the groaning agent.
"It’s over, Vance," Eric said, pointing the barrel straight at the man's forehead. "The files on your rogue task force have already been transmitted to the Director of the FBI and the Department of Justice. By now, your offshore accounts are frozen, and your team is being rounded up in Miami."
Vance spat blood onto the white marble, looking up with pure hatred. "You think you've won, Moretti? You're a mobster! You'll always be a criminal!"
May you like
"Maybe," Eric said softly. "But I'm a criminal who protects his family. You're just a thief in a suit."
Eric pulled the trigger—not with a bullet, but with a stun dart that instantly paralyzed Vance, leaving him conscious but completely immobilized until the legitimate federal authorities arrived.
