Chapter 8 - The Miami Protocol

The rain had stopped by dawn, leaving the streets of Chicago glistening under a pale, gray sky.

Inside a high-tech mobile command trailer parked near the Port of Chicago, computer screens flickered with real-time satellite imagery and encrypted data streams.

Emma sat in a leather swivel chair, wrapped in a fresh wool coat, sipping hot tea. Across from her, Eric was reviewing tactical maps with his remaining lieutenants, while Giuseppe stood by the window, watching the massive cranes lift shipping containers onto ocean-bound freighters.

"The FBI task force isn't operating through official channels," Eric explained, pointing to a red zone highlighted on the digital map. "It’s a rogue unit led by Special Agent Marcus Vance—Arthur Vance’s son. He used his father’s old connections and advanced surveillance tech to create 'The Bishop' persona. He wanted the shadow fund to finance his own private security empire in South America."

"And my grandfather's ledger has the master passwords," Emma said, realization dawning on her. "If Agent Vance gets those codes, the money vanishes into untraceable offshore accounts forever, and Eric goes to prison."

"Not just Eric," Giuseppe said, turning around. "All of us. Vance has already issued arrest warrants under seal for organized crime and murder. The moment we try to leave the city, every law enforcement agency in the state will be hunting us."

"Then we don't leave the city," Eric said, his voice cold and decisive. "We bring Vance here."

"How?" Emma asked. "He’s sitting in a secure compound in Florida surrounded by private mercenaries and federal shields."

Eric turned his gaze to Emma. A slow, dangerous smile spread across his face. "We give him what he’s been hunting for thirty years. We offer him the translator."

Emma’s heart skipped a beat. "Me?"

"Vance knows Victor failed," Eric continued. "He knows the ledger is in dialect. He can't crack it without you. We leak a fake signal showing that you've broken away from me, that you're trying to sell the translation to the highest bidder at an auction in downtown Chicago tonight."

"It’s too dangerous, Eric," Giuseppe warned, his hand gripping the edge of the map table. "She’s my granddaughter! I won't put her in the crosshairs of a military-grade strike team!"

"I won't be in the crosshairs," Emma spoke up, stepping forward. She looked at her grandfather, then at Eric. "Because Eric won't let them hit me. Right, Eric?"

Eric looked deep into her eyes. For the first time since this nightmare began, the cold, impenetrable mask of the Mob boss melted away, revealing the man beneath—a man burdened by heavy responsibility, but bound by a fierce, unyielding sense of honor.

"I would burn this city to the ground before I let anyone hurt you, Emma," Eric said softly, his voice thick with sincere emotion. "I give you my word."

Emma felt a warm flush spread through her chest despite the cold room. She nodded slowly. "Tell me what I need to do."
