Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The rain outside had turned into a full-scale tempest. Thunder shook the foundations of the mansion as Alessio and I rushed down the grand marble staircase into the main foyer.
Alessio held his spare sidearm in his right hand, his left arm bruised but fully functional.
In the center of the foyer stood Uncle Vincenzo. He was wearing his heavy trench coat, holding a leather briefcase in one hand and a gold-plated revolver in the other. He was heading for the side exit that led to the underground garage.
"Going somewhere, Uncle?" Alessio’s voice echoed through the high-ceilinged room like a death knell.
Vincenzo froze. He turned around slowly, his face twisting into a bitter, desperate scowl when he saw Alessio and me standing at the bottom of the stairs.
"Alessio," Vincenzo sneered, holding his revolver steady. "You always were too resilient for your own good. Just like your father."
"You blackmailed Martha," I said, stepping forward alongside Alessio. "You forced an innocent woman to compromise the nursery network, slipped into Leo's room while I was away for two minutes, and tried to murder an innocent four-month-old baby!"
"Innocent?" Vincenzo spat, his eyes wild with greed and hatred. "That brat is a parasite! He hasn't even learned to speak, yet he holds eighty percent of the Romano empire’s wealth in his name! I spent forty years building this family business! I bled in the streets of Chicago! And your father gave everything to a baby!"
"My father gave the empire to his rightful bloodline," Alessio said, taking a step forward. "You were just a manager, Vincenzo. A greedy, pathetic vulture waiting for a child to die."
"Step back, Alessio! Or I put a bullet in your head right here!" Vincenzo yelled, aiming the revolver directly at Alessio’s chest. "I have two boats waiting at the marina. I have five hundred million in the Swiss accounts. I don't need this house anymore!"
"You're not leaving this house alive," Alessio said softly.
Suddenly, a door on the second-floor balcony burst open.
Elena stood there, holding a heavy shotgun she had taken from the estate armory, her eyes red from crying. "You monster! You tried to kill my nephew and frame me for it!"
Vincenzo panicked. Hearing Elena’s voice, he raised his gun toward the balcony and pulled the trigger!
BANG!
The gunshot echoed deafeningly through the foyer. Splinters of wood exploded from the banister near Elena as she ducked for cover.
In that fraction of a second, while Vincenzo’s attention was diverted, Alessio closed the distance.
Alessio lunged forward, grabbing Vincenzo’s wrist and twisting it upward. A second shot went off, blowing a hole in the crystal chandelier above. Alessio delivered a brutal knee to Vincenzo’s midsection, forcing the old man to collapse to the floor, gasping for air.
The gold revolver clattered across the marble floor.
Alessio stood over his uncle, his face dark as a stormy night. He racked the slide of his handgun and pointed it directly between Vincenzo’s eyes.
"Give me one reason why I shouldn't paint this foyer with your brains," Alessio whispered, his finger tightening on the trigger.
"Alessio, wait!" I cried out, rushing to his side.
Alessio didn't lower the weapon. "He tried to choke my son to death, Clara. He deserves no mercy."
"If you kill him now, in cold blood, you validate everything he said," I argued, grabbing Alessio's arm, forcing him to look at me. "Show him that you are a true leader, not a butcher. Hand him over to the federal authorities with the mountain of financial fraud and murder attempt evidence we have. Let him rot in a maximum-security prison for the rest of his miserable life, watching your family thrive without him!"
Alessio looked into my eyes. The wild, dark fury in his gaze slowly began to recede, replaced by a cold, resolute composure.
He lowered the gun.
"Dominic," Alessio called out calmly as Dominic and three guards rushed into the foyer.
"Boss!"
May you like
"Tie my uncle up," Alessio ordered. "Call the federal prosecutor on our private line. Give them the Swiss bank logs, the wiretap recordings, and the evidence bag. Ensure he never sees the light of day again."
"With pleasure, Boss," Dominic smiled grimly, hauling the screaming, cursing Vincenzo off the floor.
